  • Monte Irvin involved in Orange, NJ's bicentennial

    I saw it yesterday, so figured I'd post here.

    Orange's bicentennial blowout
    Baseball legend comes home in May, 6-month celebration starts in June

    * * *

    A main ingredient will be added to the mix on May 16.

    That is when hometown hero and Major Leaguer Monte Irvin re turns to his birth city. Irvin is a black baseball legend who began his sports career with the Newark Eagles, then joined the New York Giants. He helped that now-de funct team win two pennants and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973.

    Irvin will fly in from his home in Homosassa, Fla., to participate in the renaming of Essex County's Orange Park, to Monte Irvin's Orange Park. The giant outdoor recreation facility, off Central and Oakwood avenues, received a multimillion- dollar upgrade.

    A gala parade planned for Oct. 7 will complete Orange's bicenten nial.
