  • 12 Years a Slave & Zip Northrup

You may have seen the movie 12 Years a Slave that is up for an Oscar and won a Golden Globe recently. It is the true story of Solomon Northup, a free negro, who was tricked and sold into slavery back in 1841. His son Alonzo fought in the Civil War and later settled in Weedsport, NY. Alonzo's son, Harry "Zip" Northrup, played for the famous Weedsport Watsons semipro baseball team, and then later played on the Cuban Giants. He coached his son's high school team.

I am researching the Homer Braves semipro team and ran across another "Zip" Northrup misidentified as Cliff who played third base in 1949. Thanks to Gary Ashwill's blog agatetypepad, I finally put the pieces together to confirm that Raymond (Mickey) "Zip" Northrup from Port Byron, NY was Harry "Zip" Northrup's son, and was the great grandson of Solomon Northup.

Very cool thanks for the work Tony.
"No matter how great you were once upon a time — the years go by, and men forget,” - W. A. Phelon in Baseball Magazine in 1915. “Ross Barnes, forty years ago, was as great as Cobb or Wagner ever dared to be. Had scores been kept then as now, he would have seemed incomparably marvelous.”
