  • Wow, Drub Oil!

Since 1900 Don Drysdale did "this" more than any other pitcher, but one. What is "this" and who is the other pitcher??

I'm going to say knocking down batters and the other pitcher might be Joe McGinnity?

Hey, who knows, but I doubt it. No, this is something documentable.

Hitting a home run and winning that game?
Mythical SF Chronicle scouting report: "That Jeff runs like a deer. Unfortunately, he also hits AND throws like one." I am Venus DeMilo - NO ARM! I can play like a big leaguer, I can field like Luzinski, run like Lombardi. The secret to managing is keeping the ones who hate you away from the undecided ones. I believe the entire phrase "wow drub oil" is an anagram for the answer to the question. It took me a while until someone explained that. So it would be like

Drysdale holds the modern NL record for hit batters, 154. Walter Johnson had 205 to lead MLB.

Drysdale held the record for consecutive scoreless innings, 58.0, until broken by Orel Hershiser, 59.0

Is Wilbur Wood the other pitcher? (Wilber Wood = Wow, Drub Oil!)
A lot of people say this honor validates my career, but I didn't work hard for validation. I didn't play the game right because I saw a reward at the end of the tunnel. I played it right because that's what you're supposed to do, play it right and with respect. If this validates anything, it's that learning how to bunt and hit and run and turning two is more important than knowing where to find the little red light at the dug out camera. - Ryne Sandberg

I'll just guess hit batters? I know Drysdale worked them close and with Wood the knuckler, who knows? Or maybe it's wild pitches??

Wilbur Wood is the other guy, but this has nothing to do with HBP's. Beside Johnson, six other pitchers in the modern era have hit more batters.

Drysdale never lost 20 in a season. This is a career achievement, not something based on a single season.
