  • Steve Carlton's magical 1972 season. Surprisingly, It didn't start out so great.

Acquired in a trade with the St.Louis Cardinals prior to the start of the 1972 season, Phillies lefthander Steve Carlton won 27 games against only 10 losses and Carlton won 45.76%of the Phillies wins that year (27 of 59). That's a fact that many people are familiar with, but here's something that is known to only a few students of the game:
When Carlton took the loss on a May 30 game, his win-loss record dropped to 5-6. From that point on continuing through Oct.3, when Carlton won his 27th game on the next-to-last game of the '72 season, Carlton's record was a scintillating 22-4.
