  • David versus...

David Wells had an interesting 21-year career with nine different teams. He racked up 239 wins, two third-place Cy Young finishes, 2201 Ks, and a 4.13 ERA. He had a colorful personality, and was not afraid to be a clubhouse rabble-rouser. He also won 2 World Series, with the 1992 Blue Jays and 1998 Yankees. Oh, and he pitched the 15th perfect game in MLB history vs. the Twins during that 1998 season.

But he managed something rather impressive in 2004 that no other pitcher did that year, not even Cy Young runner-up Randy Johnson nor ERA title winner Jake Peavy. What was it? Two hints: It involves a minimum of something, and those pitchers I just mentioned were very close to joining Wells in accomplishing it.

Third hint: the title. Who would the "versus" be in that era?
