I'm not sure if this is trivia since I don't know the answer, I'm asking it.
Can someone give the top 20 or so career spans, IOW difference between first major league season and last, even if it was only a 1-game appearance? For example, I'm guessing Minnie Minoso is at the top of the list. Thank you
Mythical SF Chronicle scouting report: "That Jeff runs like a deer. Unfortunately, he also hits AND throws like one." I am Venus DeMilo - NO ARM! I can play like a big leaguer, I can field like Luzinski, run like Lombardi. The secret to managing is keeping the ones who hate you away from the undecided ones. I am a triumph of quantity over quality. I'm almost useful, every village needs an idiot.

Are you talking about playing only, or coaching/ managing as well?

Mostly playing (but a separate top 20 list including managing would be great too

I have a new respect for Joe Torre now- I never really sat there and thought about how long he's been in MLB for. That's quite an accomplishment.

Actually, I was kinda using it for my list ,as far as the earliest playing date of any player someone played with, to the latest playing date of any player someone played with (and with managers ONLY not coaches, the latest playing date of any player someone managed). I think Joe's span goes something like this.
Played with Warren Spahn, who began playing 4/19/1942
Played with Lee Mazzilli, who ended playing 9/29/1989
Managed guys like Melky Cabrera, Robinson Cano and who knows what Dodger phenoms that will last for a while, that could go on into the 2030s

                  Here's a few more:
Nick Altrock played with Tom Daly who started on 4/30/1887 and with Cecil Travis who finished on 9/23/1947. A 60+ year span.

Julio Franco played with Pete Rose who started on 4/8/63 and with the following players who are all under 25: David Wright, Jose Reyes, Lastings Millege, Mike Pelfrey, Jeff Francoeur, Jerrod Saltalamacchia.... If any of them are still playing 17 years from now in 2025 that would be a 62+ year span!

Connie Mack played with Joe Start who started on 5/18/1871 and managed Nellie Fox who played until 7/25/1965. That's a 94 year span. He also managed Herman Franks who managed until 9/30/1979. A 108+ year span!

                      Four more:
Minnie Minoso played with Al Benton (debut 4/18/1934) and Harold Baines (finished 9/27/2001) = 67+ years

Tommy John played with Early Wynn (9/13/39) and Al Leiter (10/2/2005) = 66+ years

Phil Niekro played with Warren Spahn (4/19/42) and Tom Glavine (2008) = 66+ years

Nolan Ryan played with Roy McMillan (4/17/1951) and Ivan Rodriquez (2008+) = currently 57 years.

I actually have Davy Force, who beats him by a couple weeks

Nah, go with Joe Start. He was already 28 in 1871 and had been a star for the better part of a decade by then.

I looked at the current coaching list and came up with some more people with long tenures in the game.

                            46 years - Manny Mota (1962-2008)
                            44 years - Dave Duncan (1964-2008)
                            44 years - Pat Corrales (1964-2008)
                            44 years - Mel Stottlemyre (1964-2008)
                            44 years - Sandy Alomar Sr. (1964-2008)

                              For what it's worth

Tom Sheehan's entire career in baseball spanned 1915-1978 (he scouted for the Giants until his retirement at age 84). That's one year longer than his first big league manager, Connie Mack.
