  • most total field positions played in one season

Since players can play as many as 9 different field positions in one game, someone theoretically could play 1,458 total field positions in a 162-game regular season. 162 x 9 = 1,458. Obviously no one has come close to that. The highest I've found so far is 209.

    1. What player played 209 total field positions in one regular season?
    2. Can you find a player that topped 209?

    Lance Berkman had 210 in 2002. 76 (LF) + 122 (CF) + 12 (RF)
    Cesar Tovar had 209 in 1968. 78 (OF) + 75 (3B) + 35 (SS) + 18 (2B) + 1 (C) + 1 (1B) + 1 (P)

Nice. Tovar is the one I found. Is 210 the highest, or is it just the highest one that you found?

        I think both.

Actually Tovar is higher because his OF positions are listed together while Berkman has his seperated. Tovar played LF, CF, and RF in the same game in 1968 so instead of counting as 3, baseball-reference is only counting that as 1 so Tovar should have at least 211 (plus any other game in 1968 where he played 2 or more OF positions).
