  • Need help finding answer

This shortstop, infamous for his wild throwing arm, overthrew first base and hit a spectator in the stands, killing the fan. The incident happened during infield practice and not during the course of the game. Who is the player and what team does he play for?

    Derek Jeter
Mythical SF Chronicle scouting report: "That Jeff runs like a deer. Unfortunately, he also hits AND throws like one." I am Venus DeMilo - NO ARM! I can play like a big leaguer, I can field like Luzinski, run like Lombardi. The secret to managing is keeping the ones who hate you away from the undecided ones. I am a triumph of quantity over quality. I'm almost useful, every village needs an idiot.

I think he was joking when he said Jeter...

What time frame are we talking?

As far as a serious answer, I remember hearing this (truthful or not) story but can't remember who it was about. As far as scatterarm SS, I remember Bill Russell, and Shawn Dunston's throws were enough to kill someone

That narrows it down. I was thinking the 1880's but now I'll need to rethink.

Was this in a major league game?

                  There's a very interesting article:

Gorman, Bob, and David Weeks. "Foul Play: Fan Fatalities in Twentieth-Century Organized Baseball." NINE: A Journal of Baseball History and Culture Volume 12, Number 1, Fall 2003, pp. 115-132.

I just read it, but an incident exactly like the one you describe doesn't appear in the article.

It's supposed to be a major league game, thank you for pointing me towards the article, I'm still trying to find the answer.

I saw somewhere, can't remember where now, that a Washington Senator did this but it didn't say who it was.
