  • More Wins than Walks Allowed

Name the three pitchers since 1900 to qualify for the ERA title and finish the season with more wins than walks allowed. (one guy did it twice!)

    1. Christy Mathewson 1913,1914
    2. Brett Saberhagen 1994
    3. Slim Sallee 1919

A couple of old Pirates were famous for walking very few batters. I have no idea if either one did this, but I'll mention the names

    Babe Adams and

    Deacon Philippe.

Correct! In 1994, Saberhagen had 14 wins and only 13 walks.

Eckersley for sure - I think he qualified for the ERA title in '89 at least.
Mathewson also walked very few, so I'll guess him too.

Mathewson is correct. He did it in 1913 AND 1914.

I'll go old school again and guess a few more... Cy Young? Lefty Grove? Big Train?

More modern, how about Pat Hentgen or Denny McClain?

Well, I was ALMOST right on Babe Adams. In 1920 he won 17 games, walked 18, in 263 innings pitched!

Nope. But he came close a couple times.
