  • Postseason question

Brandon Phillips and Dale Mitchell are the only two players to do both of these things in a postseason game. What did they do?

  • #2
Here's a little hint. They each accomplished these things in two different games. They did the first thing in one postseason game and then did the other thing in another postseason game.

They both made the final out of a postseason no-hitter.
"Heck, all I got was a $100 check. I should have kept it and framed it, but I had to eat".

Infielder Bob Hegman, when asked if he received a World Series ring for playing one inning of one game with the World
      Champion 1985 Kansas City Royals.

You are correct. Now what was the other thing they both did in a postseason game?

Here's the other correct answer. They both hit a leadoff home run in another postseason game.

Mitchell also made the final out in the 1954 World Series, too, although nothing fancy- a pop-up to Hank Thompson.

this is what makes comparisons like these so weird

mitchells post season was all world series

philips has never done anything except play in one little 3 game division series, not even a league championship and certainly not a world series

post season stats and comparisons for modern players (since the playoffs expanded) vs players who only go to the post season if they won a pennant just dont equate
              1. The more I learn, the more convinced I am that many players are over-rated due to inflated stats from offensive home parks (and eras)

Should the question be thrown out, then?

well it is tantamount to these post season leaders list where a lot of the braves and yankees players from the 90s-00s who played in up to 19 post season games in one year
                  (year after year after year)

take it for what its worth

in the good old days there were a maximum of 7 post season games for all of baseball (and as few as 4)

                  now there can be 20 + 14 + 7 = 41 in just one year (with a minimum of 24)

do they equate? I venture a no

Using your logic, should we forget about Roy Halladay's no-hitter in Game One of the 2010 NLDS? After all, it didn't happen in the World Series.

That no-hitter wasn't as impressive as a World Series no-hitter would have been.

Let's not forget that Halladay's no-hitter in the 2010 NLDS came against the top scoring team in the NL. In addition, it came in his very first postseason start ever and there was a lot more media attention in Doc's NLDS no-no than there was for Larsen's perfect game in the '56 World Series.(No ESPN or Fox back then.) Plus, that was Halladay's second no-hitter of the season.
