  • Three Strikes and You're Out - WAR

Going from the 1900s through the 2000s, can you name the top season by a pitcher and a position player for each decade, according to WAR? You have to guess in player-season format, such as Matt Kemp 2011. If you guess wrong three times, you're out, which means you can't guess anymore.

I'll keep track of strikes and outs, but I can't monitor the thread continuously, so I have to ask everyone to follow the honor code. Users who guess correctly will be marked by their player(s). I will judge a winner based on a combination of correct guesses and success percentage. Since there is no perfect way to do this, don't take the idea of winning too seriously. Nevertheless, anyone who strikes out is out of the running. As always, no peeking.

I hope I've covered everything. Let the game begin.

1900s Position Player: Honus Wagner 1908 (BigRon), Pitcher: Cy Young 1901 (PVNICK)
1910s Position Player: Ty Cobb 1917 (westsidegrounds), Pitcher: Walter Johnson 1913 (GiambiJuice)
1920s Position Player: Babe Ruth 1923 (brett), Pitcher: Pete Alexander 1920 (Tyrus4189Cobb)
1930s Position Player: Babe Ruth 1931 (Zito75), Pitcher: Bucky Walters 1939 (PVNICK)
1940s Position Player: Ted Williams 1946 (brett), Pitcher: Dizzy Trout 1944 (ian2813)
1950s Position Player: Mickey Mantle 1956 (GiambiJuice), Pitcher: Robin Roberts 1953 (westsidegrounds)
1960s Position Player: Carl Yastrzemski 1967 (ian2813), Pitcher: Bob Gibson 1968 (brett)
1970s Position Player: Joe Morgan 1975 (brett), Pitcher: Steve Carlton 1972 (GiambiJuice)

Bonds 2001 and Pedro 2000 are correct. The 1990s answers are both wrong.

One more thing. Answers are based on total WAR, so hitting is included for pitchers, and vice versa. It made no difference in the previous guesses, and might not affect things at all, but people should know for future reference.

I'll guess Honus Wagner 1908 for the 1900s position player.

Johnson 1913 is correct. All the rest are wrong, and that means you've struck out.

                          Bob Gibson 1968?

Thinking about 1990s position player. Is it Cal Ripken 1991?

                          1921 Ruth-sure about that one.

                          Ted Williams '46.

I want to wait on some more guesses in case I struck out already.

Morgan is right. Henderson is wrong.

                              Then it was Ruth '23.

If Ruth is right I have one more guess on the 80s position player.

I think its Yount in '82, and also pretty sure of Feller in '46, but if yount is wrong I struck out already. Don't know any more. My next guess was going to be Grove in '31, but that one is already a strike.
