  • Jim Thome: A Strikeout Per Game

How many players who have had a lengthy career of say at least 1500 games played and have had more career strikeouts than games played?
Jim Thome will soon become the second player in history to strikeout 2,500 times. Through April 13 he had 2491 strikeouts in 2490 games played.
While he may not play enough to pass the all-time leader Reggie Jackson in strikeouts in 2012, (Jackson's record is 2,597 Ks ), Thome might do it in 2013 should he continue playing next season. What's more, Thome's strikeoout rate of 2491 in 2490 games is much higher than Jackson's stikeouts to games ratio of 2597 strikeouts in 2820 career games.

That's it? A fraternity of three? That's one elite club players don't want to be a member of.

Why not? They're all well above average hitters.
        My top 10 players:

        1. Babe Ruth
        2. Barry Bonds
        3. Ty Cobb
        4. Ted Williams
        5. Willie Mays
        6. Alex Rodriguez
        7. Hank Aaron
        8. Honus Wagner
        9. Lou Gehrig
        10. Mickey Mantle

            MEMBERSHIP STATUS: LAPSED

Though June 9 Thome is no longer a member in good standing with this unique club. Currently he has 2,500 strikeouts in 2501 games so it's just Canseco and Dunn with 1500 games played and more strikeouts than games played. - So membership in the club has dropped by one- third.

Carlos Pena already has more Ks than Gs. 216 games to go to reach 1500.

Russell Branyan doesn't have 1500 games under his belt, but he has played for 14 years. I would say that's lengthy enough career to qualify.

Mark Reynolds would play every game for the next 1.5 seasons, never strikeout, and still be behind the curve.

If you could guarantee that Adam Dunn would never have a season as horrible as he had in 2011 (years like that will definitely shorten your career), my money would be on him to Hit 500 or even 550 homeruns and overtake both Jackson and Thome, plus Galarraga and the other "big whiffers" to become the all-time strikeout leader.
