Noticed that David Wright has reached base 2+ times in his first 9 games of the season, and counting. Just wondering if anyone knows what the record is to start a season.

I'd like to continue the "Start of Season Streak" theme, in honor or yesterday being the 50th anniversary of the New York Mets' first win.

In 1962, on April 23, the Mets won their first game, giving them a record of 1-9. They beat the Pirates, who began the '62 season 10-0 and ended the day 10-1.

In all of modern major sports history -- including football, basketball, hockey, soccer; all the major sports -- it's happened only one other time that a team with a record of 0-9 or worse beat a team that was 9-0 or better. Name the teams and the year.

On a board with such knowledgable people, I'm surprised no one was able to get this one. However, I'm also honored to have stumped the band.

The answer is 1918. In 1918, the Brooklyn Robins began the season 0-9, while the New York Giants began theirs 9-0. On April 27, at Ebbets Field, Brooklyn beat New York, bringing their records to 1-9 and 9-1, respectively.

Along with 1962, it's the only other time in all of modern major sports history that a team with a record of 0-9 or worse beat a team with a record or 9-0 or better.
