  • Pitcher with most intentional walks

Without looking it up, can you name the pitcher with the most intentional walks received in a season? How about a career? This is counting only players who spent at least 50% of their games at pitcher.

    Received? Babe Ruth?

Has to be wrong. Too easy.

      Ruth is incorrect.

I will guess Newk for year and Spahn for career.

By the way, my Lahman database only goes back so far for IBB. When did they start keeping track? (I wasn't looking up the answer, I swear. :-( )
Indeed the first step toward finding out is to acknowledge you do not satisfactorily know already; so that no blight can so surely arrest all intellectual growth as the blight of cocksureness.--CS Peirce

Hint for pitcher #1 (most in a season):

I had my best years in the Boston Red Sox, winning 18 games in a season with the club. I was such a good hitter that I was frequently used in a pinch hitting role.

Hint for pitcher #2 (most in a career):

Despite having a relatively short career, I was a solid pitcher. I led the league in wins once and ERA twice, and I was an All-Star twice as well. I won the Rookie of the Year as well.

I was going to guess Wes Farrell. I know he pinch hit, but I didn't think that IBB's were official then. What year are we counting IBB's from?

I don't think IBB were an official stat until the mid 1950s or so. With that in mind, I'll have to take a modern player that played on a crummy team.

                How about Carlos Zambrano?

                  Earl Wilson for season?

The season record is Mickey McDermott. In 1957, he was intentionally walked twice. That year, he went only 1-4 with a 5.48 ERA in 29 appearances as a pitcher, but at the dish he hit .245 with four home runs and seven RBI in 49 at-bats. During his career, he was used frequently as a pinch hitter, but defensively only played two games at a position outside of pitcher.

Gary Peters was intentionally walked three times in his career, so he holds that record. He too was used as a pinch hitter from time to time. His IBBs came in 1963 (he hit .259 that year), 1967 (.212) and 1968 (.208).

Can you name the most recent pitcher to be walked intentionally? He's one of only two to earn an IBB since 1980. He did it in 2004. (The other guy since 1980 is Don Robinson, who did it in 1984). No cheating

It was Brooks Kieschnick, who was a pitcher/pinch hitter. So I guess it's sort of a trick question.
