To show how much the game has changed, Ruth was 35th in triples between 1901 and 1950 (159 behind the leader, Cobb, and 151 behind #2, Crawford). Rose was 7th in triples between 1951 and 2000, and was only 12 behind second (Willie Wilson) and 31 behind first (Clemente)

As an old schooler I always wish MLB would push back the fences 30-40 feet, loosen up the baseball so we could have fewer HR's with more triples, and a lot more strategy to the games.

Very surprising, considering he hit 30 triples in the minors in 1961.

As said earlier, there were fewer triples in Rose's era than in Ruth's, partly due to ballpark dimensions. Rose was the consummate hustler, but he really never was fast- pretty good speed early on, trending toward average by his late 20s. He also played much of his career in Riverfront, a park with very normal gap distances. Not surprising that he had fairly typical triples rates.
