  • WS Winners, 1980-89: Last to play for the franchise

Here's the counterpart to the other thread. This time the question is which player from that season was the last to get into a game for the franchise. Again, to use an example not on the list, let's say you were trying to answer this question for the 1942 St. Louis Cardinals. The correct answer would be Stan Musial, who played his last Cardinal game on September 29, 1963, later than anyone else who appeared in a game for the 1942 team.

Again, please specify which team you're guessing for. Also note that being the last to play for the franchise does not necessarily mean he had continuous service with the franchise. If a player left and then later returned, he still can count.

1980 Philadelphia Phillies: Mark Davis (7/1/1993)
1981 Los Angeles Dodgers: Mike Scioscia (10/2/1992)
1982 St. Louis Cardinals: Willie McGee (10/3/1999)
1983 Baltimore Orioles: Cal Ripken Jr. (10/6/2001)
1984 Detroit Tigers: Alan Trammell (9/29/1996)
1985 Kansas City Royals: Mark Gubicza (7/5/1996)
1986 New York Mets: Dwight Gooden (6/24/1994)
1987 Minnesota Twins: Kirby Puckett (9/28/1995)
1988 Los Angeles Dodgers: Jesse Orosco (9/26/2002)
1989 Oakland Athletics: Tony Phillips (8/15/1999)

    Good luck!

I believe 1980 Phillies was Mark Davis. I think I read that when I read Ian's blurb about the 1980 Phillies in his profile once.
"(Shoeless Joe Jackson's fall from grace is one of the real tragedies of baseball. I always thought he was more sinned against than sinning." -- Connie Mack

"I have the ultimate respect for Whitesox fans. They were as miserable as the Cubs and Redsox fans ever were but always had the good decency to keep it to themselves. And when they finally won the World Series, they celebrated without annoying every other fan in the country."--Jim Caple, ESPN (Jan. 12, 2011)

I gotta go with what I think is the most obvious - Lonnie Smith for the '80 Phils.
"Chuckie doesn't take on 2-0. Chuckie's hackin'." - Chuck Carr two days prior to being released by the Milwaukee Brewers

Correct on Scioscia, incorrect on Devereaux.

The answer is Mark Davis. CWS already got it.

I'm not sure why Lonnie Smith is such an obvious answer. His last game with the Phillies was in 1981. He did play for the Pirates near the end of his career. Is that what you were thinking of?

How about Ramon Martinez for the 88 dodgers?

Nope, not him either. I think the '88 Dodgers answer might be hard to get, since most people probably associate this player with a different team.

That is the correct answer for the 1985 Royals.

the 1982 Cardinals has to be Willie McGee.
How about Canseco for the A's?
