  • WS Winners, 2000-09: First to play for the franchise

With the popularity of the threads using the 1980's World Series champs, I thought I'd do one with another decade that saw a variety of winners.

The same rules apply here as before. Of all the players who got into a game for the team that season, I'm looking for the one who first played in a Major League game for the franchise. Continuous service is not required leading up to the World Series championship. A player who left and then returned counts. Also, please specify which team you're guessing for, as some of these teams shared players. The Diamondbacks actually had three players from the 2001 team play in the franchise's inaugural game, so I'm looking for all three of them.

2000 New York Yankees: Roberto Kelly (7/29/1987)
2001 Arizona Diamondbacks (3): Matt Williams & Jay Bell & Russ Springer (3/31/1998)
2002 Anaheim Angels: Tim Salmon (8/21/1992)
2003 Florida Marlins: Jeff Conine (4/5/1993)
2004 Boston Red Sox: Ellis Burks (4/30/1987)
2005 Chicago White Sox: Frank Thomas (8/2/1990)
2006 St. Louis Cardinals: Braden Looper (3/31/1998)
2007 Boston Red Sox: Tim Wakefield (5/27/1995)
2008 Philadelphia Phillies: Pat Burrell (5/24/2000)
2009 New York Yankees: Andy Pettitte (4/29/1995)

    Good luck!

    2004 Red Sox: Jason Varitek

Not sure about the '08 Phils or '09 Yankees

Matt Williams is one of the three for Arizona, and Conine and Thomas are correct too.

Just to let everyone know, the 2004 and 2007 Red Sox have different answers.

Correct on Wakefield, incorrect on Jeter. Go ahead and try one of the other possibilities.

Not Rivera either. I already said that Wakefield was the correct answer for the 2007 Red Sox.

                      Whoops, bonehead move!

So I guess that leaves Andy Pettitte for 09 Yankees...unless Joe Girardi counts (though it looks as though managers and coaches don't count)

'08 Phillies just has to be Jimmy Rollins. Most of that team was home-grown with players who came up during the mid-00's and some FAs.

My best guess for the Angels would be Tim Salmon only because I remember him having an Angels rookie baseball card back around 1993.

'06 is Albert Pujols. I am pretty sure Isringhausen came in 2002 and I know Rolen was traded in 2002.

                            Correct! Andy Pettitte it is!

Rollins is incorrect. There's one player who debuted before him. Salmon is correct for the Angels.

Actually, it's not Pujols. There are actually two players from that team who played a game for the Cardinals before him. Pujols would be correct for 2011, though.

Of course, Edmonds first season with the Cardinals was 2000. Not sure who the second player was.
