More CY Trivia, Won the Award in the only year receiving votes

There are 19 Cy Young winners where to date (since 4 are still active, though both counts should go down by one this year) their award winning seasons mark the only time the BBWAA gave them consideration in a year for the Cy Young.

Name them, and the year.

Three guys immediately come to mind- all from the era when there was only one CYA for the Major Leagues.

Don Newcombe 1956, first Cy Young winner. 1956 was Newcombe's last big season- alcohol and other issues hastened his demise, though he actually pitched pretty well for several years thereafter- though never like in his heyday. I'm confident he never garnered any votes after that.

Bob Turley 1958. Turley pitched well in several seasons, but he never approximated his 1958 success.

Dean Chance 1964. A fabulous season by Chance, though it's very possible that Koufax would have won again had he not lost his last 11 or 12 starts of the season due to an elbow injury. Chance had a couple more good seasons, including- I think- one with the Twins later in the 60s, but he never came close to pitching as he had in 1964.

Early Wynn may be another, but I'd have to think some about that one first.

Mike McCormick, 1967? He was a pretty mediocre pitcher for the most part.

What about Bartolo Colon, 2005?

I'm still focused on the single winner era. Vernon Law in 1960 is another good candidate. He had several other good seasons, but nothing memorable- and 1960 was the only winners year for the Pirates.

Yes to all of them. Missing just two from the combined era of the Cy Young. Interesting factoid, everyone voted for for the combined Cy Young from 1956-1966 would never receive a vote in the League Specific voting.
