  • Braves Without TBS

Never thought i'd see the day come....but it's here.

TBS no longer carries the Braves

Anyone else feel just a little saddened by the end of the TBS era in Braves baseball?

Yes, this is terrible. The Braves (and the Cubs with WGN) enjoyed a huge, nationwide fan base because they brought baseball to the baseball deprived. WGN is still doing this but my guess is those days are numbered as well. It's all about the money and with new portable device technology, baseball will boil down to a pay-per-game industry. Not exactly a brilliant way to attract new fans, but that appears to be where it's headed.

I remember last year when Bud Selig acted surprised that folks were angry about MLB Extra Innings attempting their exclusive deal with Direct TV. He said something like, "...there's more baseball on more channels in more areas than ever before..." I didn't care for his snobby tone, but the man is actually correct. When I was a kid, there was Braves baseball and Cubs baseball in my area. And that was IF you had cable. Without cable all you got was NBC's single game per week. Nowadays for the average basic cable subscriber to get at least ten games a week is not a problem. ESPN shows three a week, WGN shows at least one. Fox has a game and most folks have at least one "local" team (I have two) so there's another ten games a week in my case.

TBS put the Braves on the map with America at large. There's Braves fans in every nook and cranny of this great land. The end of their presence on TBS is sad to see. Chip and Pete will be sorely missed. Good thing there's XM radio.

they're still going to be on FSN and Sportsouth though, right?

by your reply i thought they'd only be available on the internet and on ESPN or something...

I hate the way this stuff is happening....and i kinda have a clue why it is happening. It's to do with Ted Turner's sour grapes....

Anyways, i hope that WGN doesn't follow what TBS has done. The Cubs are a great fixture for that station and honestly, i'd never watch WGN if it weren't for Cubs games.

FSN, Sportsouth, and now Peachtree TV (Atlanta area only) will carry Braves games. I'll only be able to catch a few TV games since I don't have cable. But, I prefer listening to the radio sometimes.

I hate it, I grew up watching Atlanta on TBS. I now live in the eastern part of NC so instead of seeing the Braves, the local cable companies figured that we would rather see Baltimore/Nationals baseball games.

its been a slow painful process for those like me not anywhere near Atlanta. first there was sportsouth that took a few games away, then they went to fewer nights on TBS and now nothing. Me being a fan has a lot to do with TBS.

My dad became a Braves fan because he would see them play so much on TBS. I liked Chipper Jones in particular.

My dad died last summer, so it really leaves an emptiness with my him gone and now the Braves games on TBS, which we used to often watch together, gone.

Matt....i sympathize with you, man. My dad was also a HUGE Braves fan....and a huge fan of baseball in general. He passed away in 1996, of cancer. But i still remember the times i'd spend the night with him at his apartment and we'd almost always be watching the Braves on TBS....back when Justice, Maddux, Blauser, Klesko and all them were really big. Those were great times....and my dad loved TBS Braves game so much, that even when we'd go TO the games in Atlanta, he would still set the VCR to record the game on TBS....even though we went to it and saw it live and in person! LOL...he was that crazy over it.

So now that it's gone....it's like a part of my childhood has been taken away...ya know. Sure, FSN and Sportsouth are ok....but it's not the same.
I might have to end up doing with the Braves what i've done with Alabama football....turn the game on TV...put it on mute and crank up the radio to hear those familiar voices calling the game.

btw...my name is also Matt...so we've got more than one thing in common bro

and they have the nerve to continue to show games once a week, but not necessarily a braves game! and the r-braves are leaving richmond after this season. rough year.

TBS and Braves baseball have been a constant my entire life for my family and I. Its a shame that its no longer around. Getting used to FSN/Sportsouth has gotten better since they got rid of Tom Paciorek a couple years ago.

Well, it's just as well that the Braves are moving out of Richmond because, well, I've never been there, but from all accounts I've read, the stadium is a dump.

I wouldn't exactly call it "nerve" that TBS is doing that. I mean, we still have the radio.

I certainly have fond memories of watching the Braves on TBS, and they'll stay with me for as long as I live.

Who knows? When I grow older and the Braves inevitably move off of FSS, I may lament that.

This does suck. I live in Baltimore. While I'm not a die hard Braves fan, I sure developed a fondness for them - especially Mr. Maddux. TBS was great - you could always expect to see a game. Just one less avenue for watching baseball if you ask me. Now, what am I going to do - be stuck watching the down-trodden Orioles day in and day out? Need a little variety. Need to actually root for someone that has a shot of winning more times than not.

As a side note, WGN seems only to begrudgingly show baseball. It used to be that the Cubs were always on during the day. Now it's hit or miss that you'd see a game - in fact I think they only show a couple a week.

that's may be true about the stadium, but I am just not seeing how they are gonna to sell tickets when they are like 10 miles from turner field(that's what i have read).

The R-Braves actually wanted a new stadium, but the money couldn't be raised, so i am pretty sure that's why they moved.

Well, I have lots of family up in Richmond and from what I've seen every time I go up there, the city doesn't look like it can harbor a professional sports team. It doesn't seem like there's any economic prosperity going on in that city. I'm sure the team will do well coming to Gwinnett. It's a inexpensive alternate to Turner Field and you get to see some of the young talent.
