I know Nomo mania was at a fever pitch in 1995, but how did Chipper manage not to win it? Chipper belted 23 HR and drove in 86 in the shortened season and was clutch in the postseason. I felt then, as I do now, that Chipper should have been the ROY.

However, that's one of life's great mysteries.46 wins to match last year's total

As I check the rankings that year, I see that he definitely deserved the ROY. Well, at least he has the satisfaction that his career has been 10X better than Hideo Nomo's. But, I've never really understood the hype on these players from Japan. First, they are classified as "rookies" when most of them have had 4 or 5 years of experience in NPB. IMO, they already have a slight advantage over traditional rookies. Like Nomo, most of the players have success their first few seasons and then fizzle out. Some of the hype factor for Japanese players in particular comes from the Japanese media, which are like institutionalized paparazzi.Last edited by Pere; 04-28-2008, 06:16 PM.

Not only am I disappointed he was not given a ROY that year, I am surprised he has not won another MVP. Maybe because of the injuries he has every year? I think at least a few years he has had very good offensive numbers and his defense is usually solid. I think he would have had a good chance last year were it not for the injuries.I collect any and all Braves cards and memorabilia. I also collect baseballs and Pre-1060's Topps cards.

Nomo had an ERA+ of 150 in 191 IP's. That is outstanding. Chipper's OPS+ was 106. Which is basically a bit above league average. Chipper finished a strong second in the balloting to Nomo (just 4 points back). I think the voters gave Chipper a lot of credit for being an everyday player versus a pitcher.
Also the voting is done before the post season begins.Buck O'Neil: The Monarch of Baseball

I'm not really in the mood to look this up right now. Did Chipper make the All-Star game this year? Just wondering with all this ROY talk. I'm thinking that he didn't. What about the next few years? Thanks in advance guys.I collect any and all Braves cards and memorabilia. I also collect baseballs and Pre-1060's Topps cards.

Okay, I do understand why Nomo got the Rookie of the Year. I admit it.He did deserve it.

To me this is a classic example of looking back at the stats without looking at much context. In 1995 Nomo was one of the major baseball stories of the year. In 1995 he was simply a better and more important player than Chipper. We must remember that in 1995 Nomo was just the second Japanese player, and first in 30 years, to come over to the major leagues. There was much intrigue and unknowns as to how he would fare. And he was great in 1995. He led the NL in Ks, K/9, lowest H/9, shutouts, and was second in ERA and ERA+. And he made the All-Star team as well. He finished 4th in the CYA voting. All in all this is very impressive for a rookie pitcher. He deserved the 1995 RoY Award. Here's a short article for TSN from July 17, 1995.Attached FilesLast edited by Honus Wagner Rules; 05-14-2008, 10:20 AM.Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist.
