Well, thems the breaks. I don't think the Braves are going to be blaming their troubles on Roger McDowell anytime soon, though.

I didn't think Mazzone could return to baseball until next season anyway. The O's are paying him for 2008. It would be great to have him in Atlanta again, but I think thats just wishful thinking. I haven't been that impressed with McDowell, but its hard to get anything done when your pitchers are always getting injured.

The article says "he intended to latch on with another team in 2008, but none came calling."

That quote is funny to me, because most organizations in baseball are better than the O's. Those $$$ were quite appealing to Leo.

Why? McDowell has given us the third ranked pitching staff in the entire major leagues. The Braves have the third best team ERA without our closer, one of our top starting pitcher and setup man. They also are ranked 3rd in HRs allowed and 7 of those 31 were from Chuck James. McDowell is a fine pitching coach in my opinion and may be better suited for the possible injection of young pitchers the Braves may see in the coming years.

My understanding is that Mazzone was old school....yelling, profane and, at times, demeaning with the Braves pitching staff. I don't think that works any more....certainly not with seasoned pitchers and probably not with younger pitchers either. Teaching is what I would look for in a pitching coach, and I think that is what we have in McDowell.

Leo was the man. And that's just it, he WAS the man. Now I think the braves have moved on and McDowell has done a fine job, considering the roadblocks he has encountered. I don't think Leo could gain the resect he deserves from the young guns who are up and coming. I'm sure ol Bobby would love to have a great friend back in the organization. He could probably work out as a scout, but I don't know if he's up for the traveling aspect of that position.

It was sad when he left us but he left us. I doubt we will ever see him back in a Braves uni and honestly I could careless. Roger is doing a good job.
