  • 2015-16 Offseason Thread

Guess it's a good time to create this thread.

A few notable transactions so far:
AJ Pierzynski has been re-signed to a one year deal
Signed Reid Brignac to a minor league deal
Signed Chris Volstad to a minor league deal

I was checking out the Atlanta Baseball Talk podcast earlier today and as a result of the Simmons trade they went thru all of the big guys left (Freddie, Markakis, Teheran) to see who they thought would be traded. It sucks that these conversations even have to be had. But this is a new time in Braves fandom, it's not unrealistic to think we'll have a guy who's been on the team less than 5 years as our big star come 2017. I think Shelby Miller is the only guy who's safe from being traded at this point.

I'm going to refrain on commenting until there's less... anger. It's almost palpable.

Coppolella fires back at the inevitable critics.

I have to say, I like that. The social media scene and assumptions must be REALLY bad for John to have to come out and make statements like these.

As I said in the CE thread, they obviously wanted Speier because Krol is just another McKirahan. Hopefully without the steroid suspensions.

Not really holding my breath on him again. I'm sure he likes it in Atlanta and he could do as well as he did last year but it's a slim chance.

He's still a cheap veteran, though. Might be better than Detwiler.

Jose Ramirez for a PTBNL from the Mariners. Obviously just a body, but he's going to get a chance to join the pen because he's out of options.

Guys I have a great idea:

We were dead last in offense last year, right? We also don't have any intriguing position players prospects besides a 19-year old... Let's keep going after journeyman pitchers and trading for pitching prospects!

I'm confused can someone tell me the logic behind this?
Rest in Peace Jose Fernandez (1992-2016)

The logic is they think they'll be able to trade from the pitching depth later. They seem stuck in the middle where they have a bunch of nice pitching prospects but no one wants to trade young or major-league ready hitting for them. That's where this is all starting to backfire and they now have to ship Shelby for some hitting.

The fact that they're shipping Shelby for hitting at least shows me they recognize their offense stinks. The truth is they also have no money to spend for impact bats. So it's up to importing guys like Gordon Beckham and possibly Tyler Flowers in attempts to make effective platoons.

I don't think I've said this before, but I'm not upset that they've traded for prospects coming off Tommy John surgeries. They're all pretty much ticking time bombs at this point because they're ridden so hard growing up. If you can get anything out of any of them, no matter what it is, it's a win.

Not a bad signing; I'm certainly not complaining about it.
