  • Ex-Cub Dwight Smith arrested for cocaine possession

ATLANTA -- Former Cubs outfielder Dwight Smith, a member of the Atlanta Braves team that won the 1995 World Series, was arrested Friday for cocaine possession during a traffic stop in Peachtree City, Ga.

Police said Smith, 42 and a Peachtree City resident, asked the officer to give him a break because he was a former major-league baseball player.

A driver's license check revealed Smith's driver's license was suspended, so the officer told Smith he was under arrest and should say goodbye to his daughter, who was in the car, according to police. As Smith said goodbye, police said, he removed an item from his pocket and placed it under a floor mat. Police said they suspect the item was cocaine.

Smith was also charged with having no insurance and driving on a suspended license. He was jailed on $7,000 bond.

Smith played for the Cubs from 1989 to 1993. In his final season, he appeared in 111 games, hitting .300, only to be released two days after Christmas. After playing with the Angels and Orioles in 1994, he played for the Braves in 1995 and 1996.
