  • Do want Dusty out after this year?

Simple question, do you want Dusty Baker's managing career with the Cubs to end after the 2006 season?

Let's not just say "Dusty sucks!" or "he doesn't teach fundamentals". Give me some real reasons.

IMO, It all depends on this coming season. It's the first time since '03 that I'm not heading into the season with confidence in the Cubs. I'm thinking (and this seems like a stretch to me) 85-88 wins, which probably would not equate to a playoff spot. If the Cubs can meet that mark or go over it, I wouldn't mind Dusty getting another 2 or 3 years. With the Cubs, he has brought us the closest to a World Series as we've been in 50 years. And if we did get rid of him, who else (a proven manager) is available?
A lot of people say this honor validates my career, but I didn't work hard for validation. I didn't play the game right because I saw a reward at the end of the tunnel. I played it right because that's what you're supposed to do, play it right and with respect. If this validates anything, it's that learning how to bunt and hit and run and turning two is more important than knowing where to find the little red light at the dug out camera. - Ryne Sandberg

I didn't want Dusty back when he was hired.

He never been known as a good strategic coach, which is what the team needed then and what it needs now.

His was supposedly a good locker room coach and good at dealing with ego problems, but I've seen no proof of that in his time here.

Whether the Cubs win the WS or lose 100 games, I want Dusty gone. The sooner the better.
Jerseys hanging in my den : Santo, Jenkins, Williams, Banks, Grace, Sandberg, Dawson, Eckersley, Sutcliffe, Wood, Prior, Zambrano, Lee

Oddly enough, I never bought a Sosa jersey, even during his best years.

When we dump him bring back Stone and Carey too. I think he wins games by being a good clubhouse guy and a motivator but you're right, strategically he doesn't have a clue. I think Orel Hersheiser would make a great skipper.

He does suck, he doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground. He's confused by most of the job description of a MLB manager. He wonders why he keeps getting wet but doesn't have enough sense to step in out of the rain. I've stated my case about D-Bake often enough around here, the only thing left to do is boo him when he deserves it and hope his obtuse thought process tells him that Cubs fans are unfair, then he'll leave and won't accept a contract extension. There's no argument left as to whether Dusty's a good manager... he's not. Giants fans know it, Cubs fans know it, and any baseball fan who's seen Dusty in action knows it. He's a dinosaur...
        Time for bed, Dusty.

Baker certainly gets the players to play for them but he is miserable about putting them in to the best positions to succeed. He has no grasp of the significance of getting on base at a proper rate. He seems to have difficulty indeveloping new players. And what he does to young pitchers is criminal.

He has had a very successful career as a manager, but most of that was due to Barry Bonds.

It really depends who is available to take his place. If the Yanks can Joe Torre (I know there was talk last year), it would be great to get him. There are definitely a fair amount of other guys out there that could do a better job than Dusty, atleast at the tactical part of the game.

              Exactly!
I agree with what you said about Stone and Carey. They are much better than Len and Bob.

I am the other way around.

Bob is not a Cub... (neither is Len... yea I know this...)

Bob just acts as if it was a job... I get sick of hearing about what he did as a manager, and blah blah blah... how many times can they show the old baseball card of his when he had that mini-fro?!?!?

Stone talked baseball... he knew what the managers were going to do before they made moves... almost as if the game was on a 10 second time delay...

I am not saying Bob does not know the game, I just feel Steve knew it better.

Len... well Len is not MUCH better, but a slight difference is still an improvement..

Chip and Steve was IMO the best... Harry was fun... but a bit over rated because he was awful to listen to at times... no doubt in the later years anyways...

But Chip has the nice voice, and a bit of excitement that is fun.

I'd take a Chip and Stone game back in a heartbeat...

Sorry I went off topic talking about Len and Bob..

                    As to the Dusty thing...

He will not be back next year if he can not guide the team DEEP into the playoffs...

                    IS that going to happen?

Sure... 2006 is the year of the Cubs..

Cubs' trainer faces mound of concern

Absolutely, Dusty goes along with Hendry.

The talk has already started in the Tribune about the health of the Cubs arms. It's not even spring training, no one has pitched for 5 months and Baker and Rothschild are talking about nursing the pitchers along!

This is not good news fans.

I agree with Cubshub. Chip and Steve were the best duo for the Cubs./ I miss them. I would love to see the Cubs get a new manager, as long as he has a good reputation. I dont want a manager that will send us back into exile.

Your enthusiasm is great and we all want the Cubs to win. It's just most of us can't get the image of Dusty Baker out of our minds . . . laid back, with that toothpick in his mouth . . . looking like he has nothing to do with the success of the team.
