  • Big Z trimmed, primed for Cy Young push...

Well I recently saw the first Spring Training photo of Carlos, and it does appear that he has dropped some weight.

HE also said recently that his goal is to win 20 games, and make a legit push for the Cy Young award.

Hmmz, pipe dreams? Well I think that is why we set goals.... to push ourself, but with a healthy team, it could happen....

But healthy.... hmmz now that is a pipe dream.

Maybe that slimmer body will equate to a few more triples this year.

Carlos will win 20 games... just when he will do that I'm not sure. He's one of the most talented pitchers in the majors (and Prior's right up there with him); if he can get everything together and get some consistent run support, he'll win 20 games.
A lot of people say this honor validates my career, but I didn't work hard for validation. I didn't play the game right because I saw a reward at the end of the tunnel. I played it right because that's what you're supposed to do, play it right and with respect. If this validates anything, it's that learning how to bunt and hit and run and turning two is more important than knowing where to find the little red light at the dug out camera. - Ryne Sandberg

I just hope he is wearing the Cubs red, white and blue when it happens.

Not carrying that extra weight will help Z's back troubles. I expect him to win at least 20 games this year if he gets any help at all from his offense.

i'll admit when someone said he slimmed down earlier i said "yeah he slimmed down last year too but he wasn't 'slim'"...but my god he looks fantastic...hopefully he doens't lose any of that power...i think if the offense is even semi-improved he has a legit shot at 20 and if this team can sneak into the playoffs he's got to be a big contender for the CY

Zambrano has pitched to the level of a 20 game winner for the past few years. He just hasn't gotten the run support or bullpen help to solidify it. Wins are the most overrated stat to judge a pitcher by. As long as Z still has a dandy ERA, WHIP, quality starts, BAA, K/BB then I'll be happy no matter his record.
What a Batted Ball is Worth (in terms of a run):
            Line Drive: .356
            HBP: .342
            Non-Intentional Walk: .315
            Intentional Walk: .176
            Outfield Fly: .035
            Groundball: -.101
            Bunts: -.103
            Infield Fly: -.243
            Strikeout: -.287

I wholeheartedly agree that wins are hideously overrated, however, the people who vote for the Cy Young look at wins. The only reason Prior didn't win the Cy in 2003 was because he had 18 wins instead of 20. As much as I hate how important wins are, the fact is that Z's best shot at winning the Cy is winning 20 games. But, like you I am more concerned with his ERA, K/BB, etc.

I would rather see Zambrano win 18 games and have a low ERA and WHIP and not win the Cy Young, than see him win with 20 wins and a high ERA and WHIP.

I don't think you can find anyone with more heart than Zambrano. He rules.

He's been one of the best pitchers in the NL for the last three years. If Cub fans would shut up about Prior and Wood and talk about a guy who has really delivered he would get noticed.

I honestly wouldn't be suprised if both finished in the Top 5 of the NL Cy Young award.

If both pitchers do that, then you know where our team will be. That would be nice.

                            How about a compromise? 23 wins with a sub-2.50 ERA and a sub-0.75 WHIP.

That sounds great. All we need is run support and we shoukld have plenty of that this year.
