    General Cubs Spring Training

    Thread devoted to the newly born season. If you'd like to post pictures or articles here, go right ahead. This is a general thread about all the spring training happenings. This way we can have all the little news stories in this one thread.

    Saturday, Feb. 25, 2006: Kerry Wood threw off the mound for the second day in a row. Says Kerry, "I'm just working on the delivery and trying to stay smooth and have smooth arm action, so the ball was coming out pretty good today."

    In other news, the Cubs signed 36 year old RHP Brian Boehringer to a minor league contract.
    A lot of people say this honor validates my career, but I didn't work hard for validation. I didn't play the game right because I saw a reward at the end of the tunnel. I played it right because that's what you're supposed to do, play it right and with respect. If this validates anything, it's that learning how to bunt and hit and run and turning two is more important than knowing where to find the little red light at the dug out camera. - Ryne Sandberg

      Did anyone else hear Jim Hendry talking about Walker on 670 The Score today? He basically said, "Yes, we like Todd. He's good. Doesn't mean others aren't better. [Referring to Walker blaming Pat Kelly on his bad fielding,] Pat Kelly is great. He's got 2 rings. It's not Pat Kelly's fault."

      Why would you not start Todd Walker? So his fielding isn't great... neither is Hairston's. Walker hits better than Hairston. Neifi can field, can't hit. So the winner is... Walker. How hard is it to see that?!

        Are you sure this is Wood on Friday? Why is he in the Cubs uniform? They normally wear that spring training gear. Plus, i think that's ivy in the background.

          i'll guarantee that's not from friday, that's ivy in the background and a home cubs uni, not ST wear

          hairston's fielding is well above walker's but walker is not as atrocious as some people like to make him out to be...and his bat makes up for any lack of D...right now-walker's the starter-but he'll have to keep his stats up all year bc i think Dusty's very ready to stick hairston in the 2-hole behind pierre if walker slumps at all

            Fitch Park (the Cubs spring training practice site) has ivy on the walls (well, technically, chain-linked fences), and I have no answer as to why they were wearing the home jerseys, but they were. There might have been an intrasquad game. Here is another photo from Friday (notice the small crowds on aluminum bleachers in the background).

                Totally understandable; the only reason I didn't think the same thing as you was because I've been to Fitch Park and I recognize it. Still don't know why they were wearing the home pinstripes on Friday; I looked at pictures from other days and they were all in the BP/ST Dark Blue.

                  Sunday, February 26:
                  • Mark Prior threw about 25 pitches off a mound.
                  • Carlos will now pitch the Cubs ST opener vs Oakland, then leave to join the Venezuelan WBC team Friday -- Blanco will depart Thursday.

                    Thursday, March 2: Cubs 8 - Athletics 7
                    • Aramis Ramirez hit two RBI singles; Ronny Cedeno, Derrek Lee and Jerry Hairston each drove in a run in a four-run second inning; Juan Pierre was successful in the second inning with a bunt single (unsuccessful in first).
                    • Carlos gave up 1 hit and 1 walk with 2 SO in 3 innings. Bryan Corey allowed all of the Oakland runs and did not retire a batter.
                    • Tomorrow, the Cubs will travel to Peoria to play the Mariners; the scheduled starters are Glendon Rusch and Jamie Moyer.

                      Friday, March 3: It's been announced that Kerry Wood will undergo a minor arthroscopic knee surgery. More details to come...

                        Im not overly concerned since its supposed to be a minor procedure. He woulda been able to go through the season but who knows if he woulda tweaked it inseason and make it worse. He will be able to longtoss again (which he was scheduled to do) by no later than a week after the surgery. so instead of early to mid april, it will be mid april to late april that he will be back (which is where he was scheduled originally, but he was proceeding well enough that the schedule was behind where he was actually at).

                        put it this way. If Dan Hampton can have it done after a game and be playing one week later, I think Kerry will be jussssst fine to be back in time for april 21.

                          Yes, he still threw today, and is scheduled to pitch Monday, the day before the surgery. So it seems to be just a minor issue, and it should only set him back a week or two.

                            Friday, March 3: Cubs 15 - Mariners 8
                            • The Cubs offense spread it out today, getting at least one run in innings 2 through 7. Brandon Sing was 2 for 3 with 2 HR and 3 RBI. Aramis was also 3 for 3 with a solo HR. Todd Walker was 1 for 1 with 3 RBI. Augie Ojeda returned to the Cubs with 2 hits and 2 RBI.
                            • Rusch went 2 innings and allowed 1 run on 3 hits. Wellemeyer didn't fare as well; he pitched 2 innings and gave up 5 runs on 8 hits (probably doesn't make Hendry want to hold on to him much longer).

                            In other news, Dusty Baker said outfielder Marquis Grissom doesn't have to have the best stats to win a job on this team. The criteria are different for a veteran who turns 39 next month.
                            ''He doesn't have to have a great spring,'' Baker said. ''Spring training is for the young. I'm looking for health, for bat speed and for leg speed. I'm looking for what's left.''

                            That's a little scary...

                              That's a little scary...
                              thats disappointing for wellemeyer. I think he is allowed one of those performances this spring. that was it. he better look good the rest of the spring. nice to see brandon sing looking damned good though.

                              Im not really looking at the big guys production this spring, i'm looking at the youngsters and seeing how they do. Cedeno and Murton have been impressive so far this spring (as expected) and the other guys are playing well. except for bryan corey that is.
