For me, the things I look forward to the most at the beginning of the season are the big question marks--the most unpredictable elements. DLee is my favorite current player, but not a guy that makes the promise of a new season exciting for me. No, what I'm excited to see is whether Pie can take off with the chance he'll likely be given (could be a very short leash, depending on the final roster)? Just how good is Soto really? Is Marmol really this dominating? Can Wood (my second favorite Cub) stay healthy while unleashing most of his nasty stuff in his first full year as a reliever? Finally, if there's anything baseball teaches us every year, it's that there's always big surprises. Who will be this year's Marmol? Will it be a guy under most people's radar--Fuld? If he's still around, will Gallagher emerge as a solid 4th starter? Can Dempster be a productive back-of-the-rotation guy?
Funny thing about Fukudome for me. I'm not that excited to see him. I think he'll be a fine player. I really doubt he'll be a complete flop--I just can't imagine that his OBP won't translate. I also see the chances that he'll be a premier player as very small. While he won't be as predictable as DLee or ARam, I think he'll be more predictable than Pie or Soto.
