Question about Wrigley and the Lights

Greetings, Cub fans!

New member here- Indians fan, also familiar with heartbreak and a championship drough. I guess we have something in common.

Anyway, I want to know if any of you guys were around when Wrigley Field was thinking about putting up the lights (before or around 1988)

What was the reaction? Were you OK with it? etc.

I didn't have a reaction then, but I definitely like it now that I'm a working stiff. Plus, I've always wondered if there was any truth to the theory that the Cubs were disadvantaged from playing all day games, which is supposed to be more tiring.

Born in 89...but my parents both said they were initially upset by it, but didn't mind after a while, mainly because only a few of the games were at night.

And, people always say that if the 1969 team had some night games in the season they could have held off the mets, or at least held them off better.

I was a little kid during that time and i remember that akiot of fans were excited to have some night games but the people that were living in wrigleyville didnt like the idea of having night games ... you know bright lights during the night and alot of crowds late at night .... but they agreed that there were only only to be a X amount of night games over there ... but every year now that number gets bigger and bigger .... cause they know trhat they will have more money that way

My dad has it in my baby book where the Cubs had their first night game under the lights lol...he was happy about it, even at the time when most fans weren't.

I was around a lot of fans were upset by it, but as you can see it all turned out good. I didn't like the idea at first either, but as I reflect on it now it's not bad, but I still love going to the games in the bright sunshine, nothing better. I saw my first night game a couple of years ago and I really enjoyed it.

i was 10 when they were put in, so i didnt have much of an opinion back then either. In a way I like some night games, but at the same time, I like being able to hear cubs games at work on the radio, so i wish there were fewer games at night.

If you mean in person, absolutely! I loved attending day games. On TV though, I don't care.

Born in '57. If I had a nickle for every day game I watched at Wrigley. And not just going to the park. It used to be there was no better place to spend a lovely July day then inside a Chicago corner tavern guzzling beer and watching the Cubs.

But then they had to go mess with the program. In my opinion it does matter a bit playing all day games most of all when launching both to and from a road trip. But dont forget the other team has to play it too.

I knew when the Trib got their foot in the door they would slowly chisel their way to more and more games under the lights. Now they are up to what? About 75% of other teams? All it will take is a WS ring to get the full compliment of night games. City Government will pass the bill while Wrigleyville is still drunk from the celebration.

Win or lose Wrigley was a hell of a place when they played all day games. Sitting with the bleacher bums is a heck of a memory for me back in the 60's and 70's. Yes they were lazy, crude, drank to much, smoked to much weed in the stands, didnt bathe much, never got a haircut, but they were fun and they respected the game. Nobody ever threw trash on the field back then.

It was really MLB who forced the lights on the Cubs although the ownership who bought the team from the Wrigley family wanted it. Old man Wrigley was nostalgic about all day games up till his death, Horace Stoneham also of the NY/SF Giants preferred day games and scheduled them second only in number to the Cubs. MLB got on the Cubs about lights when they were playoff bound one year(they didnt make it) and wanted playoff and World Series games at night for TV.

I also believe that in '84 they lost home field advantage against the Padres because of the day games

You are correct there, not only that, but the series with the Padres went to 7 games, so that whole thing (and the greed of MLB) could have cost the Cubs a World Series, and maybe even a championship in '84. I was only 1 at the time, so it's not like I would've noticed. Either way, to the main subject, I was born in '83 and all I remember is vague memories from my parents talking about how the neighborhood was going to be mad if lights were added, or something along those lines.
