  • 2008 All-star game

Which Cubbies, do you think will make the team of all-stars? Who would you vote for?

If all goes well, these people are going to get in I think:
    1st base: Derrek Lee
    Right field: Koskee Fukodome
    Catcher: Soto
    Pitcher: Carlos Zambrono

Here are the one's that I think may make it:
    Utility player: Mark Derosa
    3rd base: Aramis Ramiriz

That is what I think. What do you think?

Are you asking about popularity? Every year, guys make it base on their popularity that don't deserve it. No way DeRosa gets in. Utley gets the start. Hudson and Kennedy also should be before DeRosa is even mentioned. He's not even the best second baseman on his own team (Cedeno is).

Fukudome's got stiff competition, but is popular enough. Don't think he deserves to start though. Burrell, Upton, and McClouth deserve it if we are talking right now, but McClouth won't keep up his current hitting. Also, Soriano has a chance, because of his popularity, but needs to go on a tear to justify.

If Soto doesn't fall off too much, he's having the best year of all catchers, so it would be a travesty not to get in unless he collapses.

Lee should get in as a reserve. It pains me to say this, but he comes behind Pujols.

No way Ramirez starts--that's Chipper's spot. It'll be between Aram and Wright for the reserve. Wright will probably get the second spot. He's just as good with the stick, and better with the leather.

Zman gets, and Marmol has a slim chance if there's enough buzz. Marmol's having an unbelievable year in relief, but relievers need to be steller to be in the conversation, and it doesn't help that he doesn't close. On merit, Marmol should get consideration.
To offset some of the pain of being a diehard Cubs fan, I've learned to also be a moderate Yankees fan.

I agree. But I myself, think that Derosa should at least have a chance to get in. He is really underated I think.

He wont. DeRo wont get an All-Star spot this year. Theres better 2B out there. Utley to name the obvious. And I forget, Hanley dont play there does he? Kosuke, Soto, Lee are probably locks if they play like they have been and fans can vote with intellegence...though thats not always proven. Zambrano should get in too if he can stay consistant.

Yea, i don't even know about kosuke. He is VERY popular but i just don't think he deserves a start at least because although he is hitting a pretty solid OPS, his RBI's and HR's are quite low. But he has been pretty clutch and just seems to always get a hit which makes his single homerun and 13 RBI's a very shocking stat to see. I wouldn't mind if he made the start though because he has solid D as well, a very overrated aspect of his game.

Grudzielanek put up borderline All Star numbers in 1999 and 2003, but outside of Chicago, St. Louis, Los Angeles, and Kansas City, do you think anybody has the slightest clue who he is?

Soto should be a lock. There aren't a lot of superstar catchers right now anyway. He's leading starters in the NL in AVG and OBP, In SLG he's killing the competition: .086 ahead of Doumit, the next best catcher, and 6th overall for all starting position players. He's tied for most HRs for catchers (6), and has the 2nd most BBs of any catcher (16). Defensively he's tied for 1st in CS (tied with Jason Kendall.... ) and has only one PB and one E.

Other than Soto, Lee as a reserve to Pujols (ugh), Fukudome (his celebrity will help him, and ESPN is in love with the guy), and Zambrano. If Marmol were the closer he'd get some consideration, but I don't think he has enough attention focused on him to make it. Regardless of performance, he's a distant 2nd in celebrity even in his own 'pen. Aramis is a fringe contender for a reserve spot. Soriano would really have to quit sucking to contend. And quit coming up gimpy. And maybe steal a base. Or draw a walk. Or scare a pitcher.

No way that DeRosa gets in unless people get injured. Soto, in my opinion, will be there. Lee will be there, like someone above said, as a reserve. Z daddy will be there. Last October, I told my best friend that Geovanny Soto will be the National Leauge's starting catcher at the all-star game. He laughed and told me that I was an idiot for even thinking that. Now who's laughing?

DeRosa is batting .259 with 3 HR and 20 RBI...not all-star numbers, not to mention he doesn't have the popularity.

I'm not bringing down DeRosa, I think he is very valuable to this team, but some of the reasons he is don't transfer to an All-star game (such as versatility).
