Eyre Activated, and Marshall sent to Iowa

A curious move to send Marshall down. I don't think he pitched badly, but maybe they want to re-stretch him out for a starting role. This looks like one of those years we will need about 8 starters.

I would probably give Lieber at least one more start, but Lou is getting trigger happy, I bet one more bad outing and it's back to the 'pen for him. Who would pitch then?

I would give Gallagher the next shot. With Eyre up, it gets harder to bring Marshall back up, because Eyre can't be optioned, so once he's up, we'd have to release him to give up his spot. That means the next time Marshall comes up, it will likely have to be someone with an option. I know Pie and Gallagher still have options. I could be wrong, but I think Fontenot is out of options, since he played in 2005.

If not an optioned player, it'd have to be a DL or a player willing to take a minor league assignment for Marshall to come back up.

I like Marshall as much as the next guy, but I'm talking about who's available. I'm basically indifferent between Marshall and Gallagher, although I'd rather Gallagher pan out because we need to develop another righty. Teams generally should have 2 lefties at most, and with Lilly taking one of those spots, there's only room for Hill or Marshall in the long run. Plus, Veal is having a good year, and hopefully will pitch well enough to get a shot by next year. I don't see us carrying 3 lefty starters for long.

got it in one. he's going down to be stretched out. he's not going to do it on the big league roster.

This move was definitely used to get Marshall's arm back up to fullspeed instead of being used as a LOOGY, that just shows the instability of the back end of our rotation.

What this move also does is put mopup innings or bad starter outings into Sean Gallagher's lap. I love watching Sean pitch but this is alot of pressure and outside his usually scope of pitching; Gallagher is a starter. Last year in a similar type role Sean got lite up; hopefully it's the same this time around.

I thought before they should have left Sean at Iowa as a starter, and if we needed another arm brought up Ascanio. I also don't think Hart pitched all that badly, certainly well enough to be the 11th man in the pen.

I do applaud Hendy for going into this year with some options, because it looks like we will need them! Gallagher, Marshall, Hart, Lieber....all insurance for this year.
