  • Former Cub Jim Kirby dies

He only played two games in 1949, but I thought someone might care.

Actually one website lists Jim Kirby (1923-2009) as having played in three major league games and going 1 for 2 at the plate for a .500 career batting average.

The really interesting thing about Kirby's career, is that typical of a lot of marginal major leaguers of 50 to 70 years ago, once he got his brief major league shot, his career was far from over.
He began in the minors in 1942, but missed the next three years for what I'd assume to be military service. Returning to pro ball in 1946 he played until 1958. So Kirby played 13 years of Post-World War Two ball, including another nine and a half seasons after his two week fling in the majors with the Cubs in May of '49.
