  • How bad does this lineup miss Lee?

Yes there are 25 men on a team and no one man can do it. But Derrek Lee is close to it; he is the team's best defender at one of the most important positions, he is the team's baserunner (yes better than Pierre), he is the team's most consistant contact bat, he is the team's best power threat, he is this team's heart and soul. And the Cubs' record without him reflects it.

Without Lee the Cubs are a horrendous 6-17, while salvaging 4 of the team's last 9 games in April before the lack of offense was evident and are 2-12 in May. The Cubs were a very nice 9-5 before a near offseason acquisition, Rafael Furcal, ran down the first base line like Brian Urlacher through the offensive line, and injured the much bigger Lee. The Cubs were looking good and keeping hope alive in Wrigleyville, the top 3 hitters in the lineup were producing; Pierre was hitting .271 with 2 2B and 7 SB, Walker had a .405 clip with 9 rbi and Lee's line was .318/.448/614/1.062 with 4 2B, 3 hr, 10 rbi. Since then though the team has entered a huge tailspin and they aren't looking to get out of it anytime soon.

Here's what the offense has done since Lee has been on disabled list:

    Pierre is 18 for 92, 10 runs, 4 2B, 1 3B, 6 bb, 8 k, 5/6 sb, .196/.245/.261/.506
    Cedeno is 21 for 86, 7 runs, 1 2B, 2 3B, 1 hr, 4 rbi, 2 bb, 19 k, 5/7 sb, .244/.261/.337/.598
    Walker is 15 for 74, 3 runs, 3 2B, 6 rbi, 11 bb, 9 k, .203/.306/.243/.549
    Ramirez is 18 for 81, 14 runs, 6 2B, 4 hr, 10 rbi, 9 bb, 6 k, .222/.300/.444/.744
    Barrett is 14 for 50, 3 runs, 3 2B, 1 3B, 2 hr, 4 rbi, 8 bb, 5 k, .280/.379/.500/.879
    Murton is 17 for 65, 9 runs, 2 2B, 8 rbi, 10 bb, 11 k, 2/3 sb, .261/.360/.292/.652
    Jones is 21 for 74, 6 runs, 3 2B, 5 hr, 13 rbi, 2 bb, 14 k, .284/.302/.527/.829

    Perez is 8 for 41, 2 runs, 3 2B, 3 rbi, 3 bb, 3 k, .195/.250/.268/.518
    Hairston is 10 for 43, 4 runs, 2 2B, 4 rbi, 3 bb, 8 k, 3/3 sb, .244/.283/.279/.562
    Bynum is 5 for 20, 1 run, 2 3B, 2 rbi, 1 bb, 8 k, 2/2 sb, .250/.286/.450/.736
    Mabry is 4 for 33, 1 run, 1 bb, 7 k, .121/.147/.121/.268
    Blanco is 1 for 23, 2 rbi, 4 bb, 3 k, .043/.185/.043/.228

Jacque Jones is the one of the team's hottest hitter, but that's not saying much. What's startling are the top of the order guys, Pierre-Cedeno-Walker, they are all mightily struggling. By their ineffiency to get hits or on base, it's limiting the threats when the Cubs' power of Ramirez-Barrett-Jones come up. Since Lee has been out, 3 of 4 of Ramirez's hrs are solo along with 3 of Jones' 5 hrs, and that's just not going to cut it. The top of the order HAS to get on base, even more so than before, and it's evident the pressure is getting to the top Cub's offseason acquisition, Juan Pierre. If Pierre and company don't start righting the ship, Chicago will be out of contention before Lee returns.

The Cubs need Lee like plantlife needs the sun.

It doesn't help that the lineup is skewed in such a way as to create gaps between the guys who actually are still hitting. Aramis should not be hitting fourth right now, and Juan Pierre should not be sniffing anything above the 7 spot (and only the 7 spot when Neifi is playing).

Your right, the Astros proved that last year. We'll be fine. If Dusty is still there is another story.

We can pull an '03 Marlins or '04 Astros, but we have to fire our manager first. Unfortunately, that ain't happening.

At least Wood is back tomorrow. Anyone else excited about this? I can see myself now. Watching the game, every pitch, just hoping that pitch isn't the one that he hurts himself again.

Is Hill going back down? I hope so, he has done nothing to improve us.

I would say he would be the one going back to Iowa and Wood take his spot. If I had my druthers, I would send Rusch down to Iowa to get his confidence back and put Hill in the bullpen, but you know.......
