    Womack Up, Theriot Down

The Chicago Cubs today selected infielder Tony Womack from Iowa (AAA) and optioned infielder Ryan Theriot to the Triple-A affiliate.

Womack, who began the 2006 season with the Cincinnati Reds, signed with Iowa (AAA) on May 17 and batted .467 (7-for-15) with a double, RBI and 3 stolen bases in five games.

The 36 year old has gone to the playoffs in five of his 12 Major League seasons and won a World Series championship while playing for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001. The left-handed hitter has amassed a .273 career batting average (1,339-for-4,913) with 189 doubles, 59 triples and 366 RBI.

Womack, who stole 27 bases with the New York Yankees last season, has 362 career stolen bases, ranking fifth among all active players. Womack will wear number 1.

Theriot, 26, appeared in six games for the Cubs since he was recalled on May 8. Theriot has batted .282 with 12 RBI and 5 stolen bases in 29 games for Iowa this season
