This article seems to agree with what we're all thinking. The Cubs aren't going to offer big contracts this offseason because of signings they will need to make next offseason after losing some starting pitchers. So the closing role may just go back to Rondon. And there's nothing wrong with that. He's one of the better closers in the N.L. It says the Cubs may go after somebody like Holland if they can get him cheap. The Cubs have shown that they like making the low risk/high reward deals in the past. I don't see them being able to sign Chapman or Jansen. And I recently read an article on FanGraphs that convinced me that Mark Melancon isn't going to live up to the contract he's going to receive. So there's that. Unfortunately, I just looked for that piece and couldn't find it. Maybe I'll come back to that.

Mike Petriello makes the argument that the Cubs could trade Schwarber for a high-quality young starter who is under team control over the long term. Possible options include Chris Sale, Chris Archer, and Carlos Carrasco.

1984: The Cubs signed Dennis Eckersley as a free agent.

1962: The Tigers traded Steve Boros to the Cubs for Bob Anderson.

1955: The Redlegs traded Hobie Landrith to the Cubs for Hal Jeffcoat.

1927: The Pirates traded Kiki Cuyler to the Cubs for Pete Scott and Sparky Adams.

                  ------------
Cuyler, who had drawn the wrath of manager Donie Bush for his failure to slide in a game, will hit only .285 next season, well below his lifetime average of .321. He became expendable after rookie Lloyd Waner became a starter, but will be a great addition to the Cubs. Adams will have two seasons in Pittsburgh before going to the Cardinals.

Apologies for only being able to contribute historical notes in this thread right now. But I feel this trend may continue throughout the offseason. There's not going to be much action this year.

                      http://m.cubs.mlb.com/news/article/2...ng-renovation/

Here's some news. As the Wrigley Field renovations continue we keep getting updates on what it's supposed to look like and what's being moved and apparently bot the home and visiting bullpens will be moved beneath the outfield bleachers. A new seating area will take their places. Other projects include partial facade restoration on Addison Street, structural improvements, and replacing seats. Construction will continue throughout the winter on the office building across the street and the hotel at Clark & Addison.
