Scott Boras plans to meet with the Cubs in January to discuss an extension for Jake Arrieta who will be a free agent after next season. Clients of Boras rarely sign extensions and rather hit free agency instead to get the best deal on the market.

2009: The Cubs signed Marlon Byrd as a free agent.

2001: Former USC pitcher Mark Prior wins the Golden Spikes Award as the top amateur baseball player in the US. Prior signed a five-year contract with the Cubs after being selected in the June draft.

1973: The Cubs traded Ron Santo to the White Sox for a PTBNL, Ken Frailing, Steve Stone, and Steve Swisher. The White Sox sent Jim Kremmel on 12/18/73 to complete the trade.

1931: The Cardinals traded Burleigh Grimes to the Cubs for Bud Teachout and Hack Wilson. Wilson will be offered just $7,500, reflecting the owner's new austerity drive. Grimes will have three losing seasons in Chicago before calling it quits.

1917: The Cubs traded Pickles Dillhoefer, Mike Prendergast, and $55,000 to the Phillies for Pete Alexander and Bill Killefer. Phils owner William Baker later admits he made the trade because, "I needed the money." The 5th-place Cubs expect the addition of Alexander to greatly strengthen their staff, but Alexander will be drafted in the Army.

It's being reported that over the weekend Tyson Ross had a tour of Wrigley Field and even toured the city of Chicago. The Cubs also used the opportunity to examine where Ross is in his recovery from thoracic outlet syndrome. Bruce Levine is reporting that the Cubs are trying to sign Ross to a two-year deal with a club option for a third.

The cubs are still champs. That's the important thing.

Yes. I still refer to the 2016 season as "this season" sometimes. It feels like it just ended and we had an especially short offseason. But it was last year. A new year is here and, for once, the story is different.

I love Fowler as much as the next guy (he's going to be a Chicago legend for years to come) but they forget that's not how this team was built. Why throw away millions on something they can get from the farm system? The question is when will Almora Jr. be ready for a full time position. Looking at how much time he was given and how well he did in centerfield this year I think he is the team's first option at this point to take over the role. But that may depend on what happens in spring training. And Theo is full of surprises so who knows what he will do.

                              Steamer's projections for next season:

                              .269/.300/.397 and 84 wRC+ in 263 AB with 5 HR, 28 R, 31 RBI, and 5 SB

                              http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx...09&position=OF

That level of production will earn him a part time role but he will be 23 for the 2017 season so it would be a good step forward.
I think it's safe to say the Cubs made the right choice by going with Almora. I can't believe other Cubs fans were lobbying for the resigning of Fowler, who the cost the Cardinals $83.5 million.

Looks like we dodged a bullet. Ross is out and will undergo Tommy John surgery.
