  • will any reds pictcher have more k's than Dunn

Dun is an odd type of player he strikes out so much and walks so much because pitchers don't like to pitch to him. I just think its funny that he leads his team in k's including pitchers; although harang made it close last year. Who will have more ks Adam Dunn or the leading pitcher for the reds????

    No way, no how, impossible.
Unlike most other team sports, in which teams usually have an equivalent number of players on the field at any given time, in baseball the hitting team is at a numerical disadvantage, with a maximum of 5 players and 2 base coaches on the field at any time, compared to the fielding team's 9 players. For this reason, leaving the dugout to join a fight is generally considered acceptable in that it results in numerical equivalence on the field, and a fairer fight.

that and he very rarely swings at anything he doesn't like unless there's two strikes.

I agree, I don't think there is anyway a pitcher on that staff gets over 150Ks and Dunn is a lock for that number.

nevermind that Harang had 163 K's last year.

and FWIW, Dunn had 168 K's.

Like I said, I don't think that any pitcher on this staff gets over 150. I didn't say, "No one on this staff has ever had 150." Geez, trying to be a little combative, are we?

no, i just see no reason why Harang would regress unless he gets hurt. in fact, if Harang goes 210 innings again next year, i'd expect to see 170ish strike outs.

                Okay, but I can disagree, can't I?

sure, but i thought you meant it the way of "nobody on the Reds has the ability to strike out that many batters," rather than getting enough innings to do it.

To be honest with you, I'm really not too sold on any of the Reds starters. I'm not too sure any of them do have the ability to strike out more than Dunn will. Heck you just said Harang struck out 163 last year, which I believe led the staff, while Dunn struck out 168 times. 163 is less than 168 anyway you slice it.

right, but Harang has been improving each of the last 3 years and has been able to refine his slider into the same K pitch it was in the minor leagues.

for the first half of last year, Harang had a 8.40 K/9 rate, and in August and September, you could see some signs of fatigue. in 2004, Harang was showing signs of fatigue in late July. two years running he's put himself on a hard conditioning regime, which leads me to think he might not have fatigue issues at all next year.

as well, he'll be 28 going into next season, the age where most tall right-handed pitchers begin to hit their stride (although they tend to be short strides, usually falling off by age 32). it all bodes well to having a 7+ K/9 rate.

i know you're going to disagree with me on it, but then again, 95% of everyone will disagree with me on it, especially stat guys because there's a lot of subjective there.

unless Harang gets hurt, i really don't see him having a lower than 7 K/9 next year.

and for the other side of it which i've largely ignored because i don't care, the number of Dunn's strikeouts. the high number of strikeouts is from the approach that makes him a 900+ OPS guy. you change the approach to cut down on the K's (which Boone and Robson did in 03 and 04), you get the low 800 OPS guy. the K's aren't a flaw, they're a by-product of the approach that makes you the only two time 100+ R, RBI, BB guy, and 40+ home run guy in Reds history.

I guess all we can do is wait and see! Good Luck to Harang and the Dunner, though I'm betting against them.:gt
