There is a great new book out, The 1940 Cincinnati Reds, by Brian Mulligan. It details the Reds road to the championship including the sad tale of reserve catcher Willard Hershberger who committed suicide during the season, the only such occurrence in MLB history. It also chronicles the Reds' 4 games to 3 World Series win over the Detroit Tigers of Hank Greenberg & Company. Interestingly enough, two members of that 1940 Detroit squad, catcher Birdie Tebbetts & pitcher Fred Hutchinson, later managed the Reds. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em! You may be able to find this book on eBay, but if not try www.abebooks.com.-Brownie31

"Hutch"
Johnny: Fred Hutchinson was a courageous & inspiring figure in baseball history just like Lou Gehrig. The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Facility is a wonderful world famous memorial to him. The other '40 Tiger/Reds manager, Birdie Tebbetts, was Hutch's closest friend. Tebbetts writes very movingly of Hutch in "Birdie Confessions of a Baseball Nomad", his witty memoir. This is another good baseball read, available on both eBay & www.abebooks.com. Brownie31
