_______Rockies vs Dodgers_______
_______Jeff Francis 0-2 5.01era vs Brad Penny 4-2 2.89era_______

Rockies: After two awful starts to open the year, Francis has posted a 2.57 ERA in his last three. But he doesn't have a win, and the Rockies have dropped two of the three games. He's limiting mistakes, having given up just 14 hits in his last 21 innings. His first step to recovery was getting pitches to the proper location on his arm side (outside to right-handers), and lately he has been able to use the other side of the plate for strikes and for balls when he wants. In his last start, held the Dodgers to two run in seven innings and he is 4-1 with a 2.64 ERA in 10 starts against them.

Dodgers: In Penny's last outing, he once again took advantage of an early hitting frenzy, coming out of the first inning of an 11-3 win over the Rockies with a 10-2 lead and continuing to hold Colorado's potent hitting attack in check over seven innings, his longest outing of the season. Beginning with the final out of the first inning, he retired 13 in in a row. Penny is now 13-2 against the Rockies in his career, having won both decisions against the National League champions in 2007 and adding last Saturday night's performance.

Rockies right-hander Jason Hirsh is slowly making his way back from a shoulder strain. He threw a 30-pitch bullpen session, using all his pitches, Tuesday and reported no pain. He'll throw another bullpen session Friday. ... The Rockies are hitting .215 (59-for-274) with runners in scoring position this season. ... Left-hander Franklin Morales has been optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs after beginning the season 1-2 with a 6.39 ERA, but he won't go straight to the Sky Sox. Instead, he'll pitch in extended Spring Training to work with organization roving pitching coach Jim Wright. Morales threw a bullpen session in San Francisco with Wright watching and made progress toward correcting the mechanical problems that have caused a drop in fastball velocity. ... Garrett Atkins' hit streak ended at 14 games with his 0-for-4 performance in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the Giants. ... Leadoff man Willy Taveras' three steals Wednesday matched a career high he set last Aug. 1 against the Marlins.
