  • The 2008 Dodger Season Thread.

I'll try to do a better job updating this than I did last year.

    Monday, March 31, 2008

Los Angeles 5, San Francisco 0 at Dodger Stadium

    W - Brad Penny (1-0)
    L - Barry Zito (0-1)

    LA: 5 runs, 11 hits, 0 errors
    SF: 0 runs, 5 hits, 0 errors

    HR: Jeff Kent, LA (1)

    RECORD: 1-0 (T-1st)

NOTES: The score was appropriate for the Dodgers' 50th anniversary in Los Angeles, since it was a friendly reminder of how successful the Los Angeles Dodgers have been in that time span . And the Giants begin the post-Bonds era with the other Barry starting the game and giving up a HR to Jeff Kent in the first inning. And most importantly, the game featured Brian Bocock's MLB debut (he's never played beyond A-ball), Keiichi Yabu's return to the bigs after a two-year absence, and Merkin Valdez, the only remaining piece from the Russ Ortiz trade.

You forget to point out that the score also reflected the number of championships that San Francisco have won. Talk about eerie coincidences.

Ok. Just thought it would have been fun to emphasize for those (*cough*Giantsfans*cough*) that might not pick up on subtlety. :cap:

I found it interesting that although he pitched shut out ball through 6 2/3 innings, Brad Penny said he was never satisfied with his performance. He said he didn't have command of his pitches, and that the Giants helped bail him out of jams by swinging at bad pitches and the Dodger defense played well. Well, he may not have been satisfied by his performance, but I sure was!

Los Angeles 3, San Francisco 2 at Dodger Stadium

            W - Takashi Saito (1-0)
            L - Keiichi Yabu (0-1)

            LA: 3 runs, 10 hits, 0 errors
            SF: 2 runs, 10 hits, 0 errors

            HR: None

            RECORD: 2-0 (T-1st)

NOTES: Juan Pierre TRIES to start another consecutive games-played streak, but if he swings the bat the way he did last night, I think the Dodgers would be hard-pressed not to trade him and eat a huge chunk of his salary. Matt Cain pitched better than Derek Lowe, but his run support problems continued last night. And Rafael Furcal drove in two runs and scored the game-winner on a ground ball that Ray Durham couldn't pull out of his glove. Sounds like a free agent audition year?

              Wednesday, April 2, 2008

San Francisco 2, Los Angeles 1 at Dodger Stadium

              W - Tim Lincecum (1-0)
              L - Esteban Loaiza (0-1)
              S - Brian Wilson (1)

              SF: 2 runs, 7 hits, 1 error
              LA: 1 run, 6 hits, 2 errors

              HR: None

              RECORD: 2-1 (T-1st)

NOTES: I hate rain delays. And trotting out Billingsley for 1/3 of an inning before the rain started pouring wasn't a smart thing to do. But then again, nothing the Dodgers did last night went their way. Hong-Chih Kuo looked very shaky and Ramon Troncoso got out of a huge jam, but Esteban Loaiza was the one who lost the game last night on a Randy Winn sac fly in the sixth inning. Juan Pierre didn't help his cause getting caught stealing to end the game, but like I said, nothing LA did last night went right. In other news, Chan Ho Park figures to make his triumphant return to Los Angeles after former Giant Angel Chavez was designated for assignment. Too bad he never got the chance to stick it to his former team.

                Friday, April 4, 2008

Los Angeles 7, San Diego 1 at PETCO Park

                W - Hiroki Kuroda (1-0)
                L - Joe Thatcher (0-1)

                LA: 7 runs, 8 hits, 0 errors
                SD: 1 run, 4 hits, 1 error

                HR: Brian Giles, SD (1)

                RECORD: 3-1 (1st)

NOTES: I would say Hiroki Kuroda is the real deal, but it's only one game and he was up against the Padres' #5 pitcher. He only allowed Brian Giles' solo shot en route to dominating the Padres' lineup. Russell Martin "busted out" of his slump, driving in the go-ahead runs in the Dodgers' biggest offensive outburst so far, and Andre Ethier drove in two more runs. Kevin Kouzmanoff still continued to own Dodger pitching, but it was just a two-out triple in the 9th inning. Maybe Marcus Giles can drive all the way down I-15 to help the Padres offense after he had second thoughts about reporting to Vegas.

San Diego 4, Los Angeles 1 at PETCO Park

                  W - Jake Peavy (2-0)
                  L - Brad Penny (1-1)

                  SD: 4 runs, 10 hits, 0 errors
                  LA: 1 run, 2 hits, 0 errors

                  HR: None

                  RECORD: 3-2 (2nd)

NOTES: Jake Peavy owns the Dodgers. That's pretty much all that needs to be said about this game.

                      W - Jonathan Broxton (1-0)
                      L - Trevor Hoffman (0-2)
                      S - Takashi Saito (1)

                      LA: 3 runs, 7 hits, 2 errors

                      RECORD: 4-2 (1st)

NOTES: Chin-Lung Hu singled in Russell Martin in the top of the 9th for the winning run. In four games, Hoffman has blown a save, lost two games, and has an ERA of 12.27. Perhaps a hangover from the end of last year? Next up, out to Arizona

                      Pitching matchups:

Monday: Esteban Loaiza VS Dan Haren
Tuesday: Chad Billingsley VS Doug Davis
Wednesday: Hiroki Kuroda VS Micah Owens

Andruw Jones continues to struggle, going 0 for 4 with 2 K's and leaving 5 runners on. Currently, he's hitting .115

Since Loaiza won his Dodger debut, he hasn't won since. I rank the acquisition of Loaiza up there (or is it down there?) with the Juan Pierre signing.

The Pierre signing wasn't that bad. I think the Loaiza one was worse. He had an ERA of over 8 in 5 starts. Right now his ERA's 6.75. So, I think the Loaiza one was worse
