  • Vin Scully

I read somewhere that Vin Scully has signed thru to 2008. That is only 3 seasons and he must be very close to retirement so will 2008 be his swansong?

Who knows. Scully turned 78 last November so anything you get ought to be counted as a blessing.

Many Dodger fans, including me, expected Vin to announce this would be his last season, so three more years was a wonderful gift! What will he decide to do then at age 80? Who knows - he said he'll see how he feels at that time, but our other local legend, Chick Hearn, was still going strong at 85, and had planned to keep going for a few more seasons, but he just had to try and move that dang planter.

      Go Vin Go!

        LA announcers

Per Elvis...right on! One of your posts spoke to the relative objectivity we've heard from our local announcers. This is no Beantown where Johnny Most almost broke down when the Lakers won the title back there one year. Instead, the likes of Vinny (no one else comes close but maybe John Miller), Dick Enberg, Chickie Baby (it's in the fridge!), Drysdale, Ross Porter, etc. We have lived through decades of fair and objective reporting. We have been and are blessed.

Well Vin Scully loves what he does, and I'm glad he doesnt do all the away games because it seems easier on him and gives him time to chill after all the games he announces. Without Vin it just wouldnt seem like Dodger Baseball.
BTW KCGhost, have you ever posted anything positive in the Dodgers Forum? Sometimes your tone isn't needed. Its kinda annoying actually.

You forgot hockey hall of famer, Bob Miller of the Kings. Quite frankly, we have been blessed with some great announcers calling our games. You realize that in some part of the country they actually think the announcer are supposed to be homer. Some other fine LA area announcers would include Tom Kelly (USC), Tom Harmon (UCLA), Mike Waldon (USC and UCLA and Superdave Osborne), Al Wisk (Angels and Rams), Dick Lane (Wrestling from the Olymipc and LA T-Bird fame), Bill McDonald (Fox sports) and many others.

Vin Scully is a great announcer with a smooth delivery and wonderful anicdotes.

Ralph Lawler should be a HOFer, too. It's just unfortunate his team never had the winning tradition.
Using a stolen chant from Boston Celtics fans whenever an L.A. team is playing up there just reeks of inferiority complex.

Lawler's good too. One thing I really liked about Chick was how when the Lakers were playing like doo doo, he said so. When a Laker made a dumb play he would say, "That decision wasn't exactly phi beta kappa." Sometimes I used to wish Vin would be more like that, but I've realised he's perfect the way he is.

Another HOF legend behind the mic - Jaime Jarrin

I liked Bob Starr for the Angels. When I was 12 the California Angels were my favorite team and I always watched them on channel 5 with Bob Starr and Joe Butitta.

Is he the Clippers announcer? I have never listened to any Clippers game so I never have heard him. You can put the Ducks in that category, too.

I did forget to mention Bob Starr who did fine work for both the Angels and thr Rams, Jaime Jarrin is the Vin Scully in the Spanish Language world, but I could do without Andres Cantor's "gooooooooooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaallll lllllllllllllllll" for that (sport) not to be mentioned.

                  Jerry Doggett anyone?

You know Ernie Harwell (here in Detroit) kept going into his 80's. If Vin feels up to it, let him announce as long as he wants.
I just hope the Dodgers give him something good to broadcast.

Thanks for all the insight - Vin is an absolute icon of the Dodgers and it is great that he is still capable at that age. I hope he does decide to retire at the right time though and not go beyond his capabilites to the detriment of his health. Undoubtedly that is why he has only signed for the three years.

I have never known the Dodgers without Vin behind the mike. He is the remaining icon of baseball broadcating. When he does decide to retire, he will be greatly missed.

I know he can't be replaced but, when the time comes, who would you like to see become the new voice of the Dodgers?

                          Vin Scully Rocks!

I also have never known the Dodgers without Vin behind the mike. When I first started listening to the Dodgers it was Vin, Jerry Doggett and Ross Porter. Wish Ross Porter was still around... I got to meet Jaime Jarrin at Vero Beach and he is a class act. The game televised on Sunday was extra special seeing Vin. I love the interviews he does with all timers in his Sunday's with Vinniy show.. It's like two old friends talking, I just sit in front of the tv and enjoy their chat.
