  • Should We Unload Andruw Jones?

I think we can trade him. If we agree to pay $17.75 million of his $18 million salary, we can gain a few prospects, move one more up to the bigs, and win this division.

    Honestly, it sounds reasonable.

Why would anybody wanna give away any good prospects for Jones?

I actually came here to make a thread about Jones. What do we do come late May if he still isn't improving and Pierre and Kemp are still bating over .300 and Ethier is as well but not getting many at bats?

Seems like right now things are okay because we are winning. But if we start losing again and Andruw is in the line up a lot he could very well be the problem.

In just a month it looks like the Dodgers have wasted $36M. That's a lot of dough to ask the GM who signed the guy to swallow. There is literally no market for Jones right now so the Dodgers are stuck. Even if you ate 90%+ of his salary nobody is going to even give you a bag of batting practice balls.

The real problem is whether the Dodgers are going to start cutting Jones' playing time so someone more productive can play. Torre is usually fanatically devoted to his veterans, but I think he will make the right move in this case. It's Colletti's reaction to that that will be interesting.

I disagree, I bet we could get Zito for Jones straight up.

Considering a change of scenery might be the only thing that helps these two. It might be a good idea.

--At least Jones is only on a two year deal. The Giants are stuck with Zito for 6 more years. For both players its keep them or just pay them to sit at home (or play for somebody else). These players have zero trade value even if you pay the bulk of their salaries for their new team.

You got me there. Right now, as far as bad deals goes, the Zito deal is going to rank as an all-time clunker. I wonder if the Giants would take Schmidt and Jones for Zito??

What's worse, an injured pitcher and a bad center fielder, or just a bad pitcher?

The former, and not because there's two of them or the monetary concerns. Everyone with two minutes of internet free-time could look up Jones's 2007 season, realize that he wasn't hurt and putting up those terrible numbers and that he's of the age to be settling into his decline. Schmidt was busted goods, everyone knew that. Colletti bit because he's in-love with some of his former players.

The Padres cut Jim Edmonds, who was a defensive liability in CF, but he had better numbers than Jones (as if that's any consolation). It's reasonable for the Dodgers to do that, but then Colletti would have egg on his face.

True, although Zito isn't much better. Maybe a change of scenery would do him good, and he's younger than Schmidt and Jones. Zito turns 30 tommorow
