  • Dodgers Acquire Thome and Garland

Garland has had a good August, and having another bat doesn't hurt.

Biggest help Thome will bring during the season is another team using there lefty specialist against him instead of Ethier and Loney. Which means if Ethier and Loney bat later in the game we might have a better match up.

Biggest help Thome can bring all together is if the Dodgers make it to the WS and we got him DH 4 out of 7 games in the line up with Ethier, Manny, Thome, Kemp. Lefty, righty, lefty, right. Have fun pitching against that.

Since Thome was acquired after 8/31 isn't Thome ineligible for the playoffs??

If that's true, they could put Pierre in Left, and Manny a DH, that would help defensively and offensively.

Loney will get some days off, methinks. He has been out for quite a bit these days, if anyone has noticed.

Having Thome as a pinch hitter is better than say, uhhh, a Juan Castro, a Juan Pierre or a Mark Loretta.

I think Thome was acquired on 8/31/09.

Mark me down first as saying that Garland will suck and please don't let him make a postseason start. Kershaw, Wolf, and Billingsley should be the obvious top 3, but please don't make Garland #4 if we decide to go with a 4-man in the playoffs. Hell, I'd put Kuo back in the rotation before I ever gave Garland a postseason start.

I am upset that Haeger won't get another chance. We already know Garland sucks, so why not at least find out if Haeger does? He has one bad inning in 3 starts and loses his job. Typical idiotic Colletti.

I love getting Thome, I just wish there was a way he could play 1B instead of Loney. I'm sick of having a 1B with the power of every other team's 2B. Would you learn to turn on a 2-0 fastball already James?

I liked Haeger too, but Garland turned things around in August. Playing for the crappy D'backs had to have attributed to his losses and bad numbers. I'll take his experience, and pitching at Dodger Stadium should be better for him.

                  Billingsley, pffft.

Pitching at Dodger Stadium makes any pitcher better. Haeger was excellent and his only bad inning was on the road. It just reeks of idiocy to bench a guy after one bad inning.

Not to mention all of the marketing advantages that Haeger provides over Garland. Who doesn't love a knuckleballer?

And the post-knuckleball effect...it's believed that due to timing issues many hitters hit worse the day after facing a knuckler. In the games following Haeger's starts the opponents scored 3, 3, and 2 runs.

With all these potential positives I just can't get excited about Jon Garland putting up his typical 5 ERA and striking out 2 batters per nine.

And Haeger throws up another zero in relief last night.

One bad inning....knuckleballers have the shortest leashes of any pitchers....

I was in attendance last night. While Garland was shaky at first, he settled down and only gave up two runs in seven innings.

I hope Haeger competes for a starting spot next year, I really enjoyed watching him pitch. Let's not forget how good Wakefield was for the Red Sox. Hopefully Haeger can be our Wakefield.

I wouldn't mind seeing him come in for long relief appearances, especially when Widehipingsley is pitching.

I don't understand Torre when it comes to pitching.
