  • Ozzie Guillen

No one can say Loria and Samson didn't know what they were getting, and loose cannon Ozzie Guillen wasted no time putting his foot right in it. Memory and emotions run deep in Miami's Cuban community - a core constituency of the Marlins. This is a wound that's going to take a long time to heal, if it can be done at all.

“The Marlins as an organization has taken every possible step to ruin a potentially long-term relationship with this community by shooting themselves in the foot time and time again,” said Tadd Schwartz, a Miami-based marketing professional. “From a PR standpoint, this team simply does not get it. The fact that Ozzie was not immediately terminated is a sign of that.”

Guillen immediately went on an apology tour, arguing that he had "mistranslated in his head from Spanish to English," and that he emphatically did not “love” the Cuban dictator, but in fact hated him. Even though he said he loved him. That’s some bad translating.

What can you do?? Does anyone seriously think Guillen meant any harm in his remarks?? While I doubt he can survive this fire storm, I am convinced that the bulk of the people clamoring for his termination are doing so simply because Guillen failed a public "litmus test". Not much different that what the left-wing Democrats and right-wing Republicans do before approving a candidate. They don't care whether the candidate is good or not just so he says the right things.

I was a young boy living in Key West when Castro came to power and can still recall the nightly news showing the executions that Castro ordered after he seized power. I have no delusions/illusions about whether Castro is a murderer. And he certainly isn't an economic genius.

It seems that he's a political and public relations genius, though, considering the following he's built in this country. (Note: I am not endorsing him.) His following is even willing to ignore firsthand accounts from real refugees in order to keep their idealized view of him.

I heard one interpretation that when Guillen said that, he meant that he was surprised that Castro managed to remain in power for so long. And Guillen is known for shooting his mouth off without thinking about what he's saying first, so I can't say this surprises me - in my capacity as a White Sox fan, it's something I've actually found very endearing about him. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt about his Castro remark for now, though I'll take it right back if he keeps it up.
