Marlins trying to stay healthy as camp winds down

Seeing Derek Dietrich sprawled on the ground and covering his face is one of the major reasons why Marlins officials nervously count down the final days of Spring Training. "Whenever you get closer to Opening Day, you cringe every time something like that happens," president of baseball operations Michael Hill said.

Jones goes deep, posts three RBIs to back Eovaldi

Garrett Jones hit a two-run homer in the first inning off Scott Feldman and added an RBI single in a three-run fifth inning to lead the Marlins to a 7-2 win over the Astros on Friday afternoon at Osceola County Stadium. Nathan Eovaldi started for the Marlins and gave up a pair of runs in 4 1/3 innings.

Two calls reviewed, upheld in Marlins-Tigers game

The Tigers' latest tryout with baseball's instant replay system resulted in two reviews, both of which upheld the original calls. One of them wasn't a surprise, the other seemingly was.

Jacob Turner, who has not been particularly impressive in Spring Training in recent years, strengthened his grip on a spot in the Marlins' regular season starting rotation Sunday with his best performance yet this year

Marlins on the rise in pitching-rich NL East

The Nationals are clearly the team to beat in the National League East. This is not a recording.

Dietrich adjusting to wearing mask in field

The masked man wearing No. 32 and playing second base on the back field Monday morning was none other than Marlins infielder Derek Dietrich. Sporting a clear, protective mask, Dietrich saw his first game action since fracturing the top of his nose Thursday.

Eyeing final rotation spot, Koehler turns in solid outing

A couple of fifth-starter candidates made strong cases to earn rotation spots Monday at Roger Dean Stadium. Taylor Jordan surrendered one run in 5 2/3 innings, while Nate McLouth homered and drove in two runs as the Nationals defeated the Marlins, 4-1. Miami's Tom Koehler was solid in six innings, but he was hurt twice by McLouth, who belted a homer to right field to open the sixth.

Furcal may begin season on disabled list

Being ready for Opening Day is the goal, but staying healthy over the long haul is Rafael Furcal's objective. So if the 36-year-old doesn't feel physically ready, he would welcome a short disabled-list stint as opposed to risking a long-term injury.
