The Padres have their first road test of the season on Friday when they open a series against the Marlins in what will be more of a homecoming for Miami native Yonder Alonso. Marlins fifth starter Tom Koehler opposes Eric Stults for the Padres.

While on the DL, Rafael Furcal is taking batting practice, and fielding grounders at second base. Ed Lucas is also doing conditioning while sidelined, keeping his arm loose by throwing.

Casey McGehee is handling third base and batting cleanup against left-handed pitchers and has impressed thus far with his obvious production, like three doubles, a triple and eight RBIs in the first four games.

Redmond gives Yelich a breather vs. lefty
Marlins manager Mike Redmond on Friday decided to make a switch at the top of his batting order. Adeiny Hechavarria was in the leadoff spot in place of Christian Yelich, giving Reed Johnson a chance to start his first game, while giving the left-handed hitting Yelich a breather against southpaws.

The Marlins have a good idea what they're getting in their starting pitcher on Sunday in Nathan Eovaldi. The Padres want big results from their starter, Ian Kennedy, but would settle for him to work deep into the game, something that's been hard to come by thus far.

Working with hitting coach Frank Menechino, Adeiny Hechavarria has focused on a middle-of-the-field approach. The shortstop has adjusted his hand placement a little farther away from his body, and he has shortened his swing. The results are evident, as Hechavarria has 11 hits through five games entering Saturday,

Fernandez, Marlins blank Padres, secure series

Only a pitch limit slowed Jose Fernandez down on Saturday night. Fernandez struck out eight in 6 2/3 scoreless innings, and Giancarlo Stanton drove in two runs to power the Marlins to a 5-0 victory over the Padres in front of 35,188 at Marlins Park.
