MILWAUKEE -- Another one down, and one to go.
The Brewers and right-hander Dave Bush inked a one-year contract reportedly worth $2.55 million on Tuesday to avoid an arbitration hearing, leaving shortstop J.J. Hardy as Milwaukee's only eligible player left unsigned. Bush, who made $450,000 in 2007, was seeking $3 million in arbitration while the team offered $2.25 million, and according to the figure reported by the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the sides settled just below the midpoint.
Acquired along with outfielder Gabe Gross and Minor League left-hander Zach Jackson in the 2005 Winter Meetings trade that sent first baseman Lyle Overbay to the Blue Jays, Bush has led the Brewers with 24 wins over the last two seasons. He went 12-10 in 2007 despite a 5.12 ERA, tying Jeff Suppan for the team lead in both wins and quality starts (15).
