    Chuckie Hacks: Kendall Batting 9th?

    Brad will love this - Ned Yost is apparently considering batting Kendall 9th in the lineup, according to a JS Online spring training blog post, with the pitcher in the 8 hole. The thinking would be to then bat Braun 2nd and Fielder 3rd, giving them more at bats over the course of the year. Somewhere Tony La Russa is smiling...

    Sweet, Nice outside the Box Thinking and if it gets Bruan and Fielder more atbats then I'm all for it.

      Earlier this week, Milwaukee Brewers manager Ned Yost told reporters he might bat Jason Kendall ninth this season, behind the pitcher. On Tuesday, St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa announced his pitchers would bat eighth all season.

      Why are managers flying in the face of baseball convention?

      I first encountered this strategy in a paper by Tom Ruane, who used Markov models to determine the optimum lineup for each league:

        Not everyone is happy with the idea of hitting the pitcher 8th including one poster at one of the message boards I posted this topic. Although I view it as a flowed viewpoint.

        But this SportingNews article is a very good and explains the thinking behind it and I think it is an idea long overdue. For years they have said the #8 hitter being a very good onbase hitter in the national league is importent for you have to think the Pitcher will be an out and if the #8 is the 3rd out witch can offen happen you can offen you are starting the next inning with an out and I've always thought that #8 spot is a spot more likely for an inning to end more then some others spots and I've always thought why can't they get past the thought of batting the pitcher #9 when they can have then in the #8 where it will not mather if the inning ends there in that case and that Onbase hitter can go in the #9 spot and be an extra runner for the top of the lineup.

            Cool, It sounds like he is down with the idea and it sounds like he is a good guy and I think he is going to be liked here in Milwaukee.

              Kendall is a good player. He was popular here in Chicago last season. Just pray you dont face too many base stealers. His arm makes Juan Pierre seem like Vladimir Guerrero. lol. I think l;ast year he was somewhere around 2 for 56 in throwing out runners for us. TI was really horrible to see.

                With the Cubs, Kendall was 5-52 in throwing out base stealers. Compare that to Estrada who last year was 11-73 for the Brewers.

                  Wow, 5-52...I severely misunderestimated him. lol. All I know is it wasnt pretty. Although, Estrada threw out 15 percent compared to endalls 9. Anyways, I wish all the luck to Kendall...I liked him and I will miss him.

                    Listening to Talking Brewers on the radio last week and Doug Melvin was saying that it's very likely that Kendall will be batting ninth when he is in the lineup.

                    We shall see how this pans out.

                      Kendall has batted 9th so far in ever regular season game, and it's been the point of some controversy in my circle of friends.

                      I like it, (though not as much as Brian Anderson, who seems to think it's the best idea since wearing a baseball glove) but some of my friends are deadset against it. They argue that it just shifts the pitcher "easy out" to the 8th hole instead of the 9th.

                      I don't think it's really bitten the Brewers yet so far, only six games in. There's a been a few hairy spots, but nothing terrible yet (easy to say, they're 5-1).

                      When LaRussa does it, I thought it was the dumbest thing ever, but, well, the Brewers are my team.

                        It has certainly paid off thus far in todays game with Kendall driving in the only run of the game to this point (it's the fifth inning as I type this).

                        I must say, Kendall has exceeded my expectations at this stage of the season. Now we must hope he can keep it up for a good portion of the season.
