JS Online: Base coaches get into gear
Phoenix - Coaches Dale Sveum and Ed Sedar were wearing batting helmets during the Milwaukee Brewers' workout Sunday but not because they were worried about parts from satellites dropping from the skies.
Sveum, who coaches third base, and Sedar, who coaches first base, wore helmets in preparation for the new rule this year mandating that base coaches wear them during games.
"We're just trying to get used to them," Sedar said.
The rule was put in effect after Colorado Rockies minor-league first-base coach Mike Coolbaugh died after being struck by a foul liner. As it turned out, Coolbaugh was struck on the neck but the helmet rule was put in effect nevertheless.
