Marcum overcomes virus to blank Astros

Houston — When Prince Fielder heard that Shaun Marcum wasn't feeling well as he prepared to take the mound Friday night against the Houston Astros, he told the Milwaukee Brewers right-hander not to worry.

"I told him it was going to work in his favor," said Fielder. "His game is spotting (the ball) and changing speeds. Usually when guys like that feel under the weather, it's that much more in their favor."

Brewers 5, Astros 0: Marcum outduels Myers in series opener

The Astros saw cagey Milwaukee Brewers righthander Shaun Marcum for the first time six days earlier in Milwaukee. Clearly, Marcum learned more from the encounter than the Astros.

Marcum used the intelligence gleaned from that outing, plus mastery of his wide repertoire of pitches, to work over the Astros for the first seven innings of a comfortable 5-0 victory on Friday night at Minute Maid Park.

Loe loses control, Astros win game

Houston — There are two ways to look at the 13-13 record with which the Milwaukee Brewers finished April.

Considering the number of injuries they had coming out of spring training, a .500 record certainly is not the worst-case scenario.
