  • Kottaras vs. Lucroy

I've always thought George Kottaras is the better batter compared to Lucroy. I know they've signed Lucroy to a long-term deal and he's the catcher of the future for the Brewers, but I like Kottaras and always have.

I know the season is (very) young, but George is really knocking the cover off the ball. He's batting .375 with 2 home runs in 8 at-bats!

I don't have anything against Lucroy, I just think Kottaras is better than a backup and I don't have an outlet for these thoughts, so, here it is.

From everything I've read and heard, the consensus seems to be Lucroy is a better Catcher than Kottaras. I took a quick look at the numbers, and over 1,700 innings in Lucroy's career, he's thrown out 29% of base-runners against a league average of 28%. Kottaras in 1,000 innings has thrown out 15% against a league average 28%. In over 700 innings more than Kottaras, Lucroy has only allowed 2 passed balls. Kottaras has allowed 14. They are about even on fielding percentage and dWAR.

I like Kottaras and I love that he get's 30-45 starts a season. I do believe he could start on a handful of teams in the league, but I like Lucroy better overall.

"It was like coming this close to your dreams and then watching them brush past you like a stranger in a crowd. At the time you don't think much of it; you know, we just don't recognize the significant moments of our lives while they're happening. Back then I thought, 'Well, there'll be other days.' I didn't realize that that was the only day." - Moonlight Graham

As mentioned above the most apparant reason that George will have to be a good pinch hitter season is those two important aspects of defense.
Again, I think GK will work out quite well as a ph, if nothing else due to a weak bench thus far.

He is a good bat off the bench. And thankfully, like the TV announcers talked about a few games ago, Ron Roenicke comes from the Mike Scioscia school of "it's okay to have your backup catcher make a pinch hitter appearance late in the game".
